Xiao Kui Posted November 5, 2008 at 02:33 AM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 02:33 AM (edited) I want to know how i can say this "we think he's stronger than he is" in Chinese The adjective doesn' matter it can be smarter, harsher, etc. What i want to emphasize is that though he very well may be __________, he is not nearly as _________ as we think he is. Thanks! EDIT: Now I think I got it, my break from Chinese was too long. 他没有我们想的那么聪明。 Or would it be 想得? Edited November 5, 2008 at 05:30 AM by Xiao Kui Quote
ImBmen Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:57 AM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:57 AM Hi,do you mean he is stronger than we thought he was?in that case you can say 他比我们想的要强(ta bi wo men xiang de yao qiang) Quote

Hanlink Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:43 AM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:43 AM The English in this sentence is very odd. Surely, the logical conclusion to your full sentence is: "... he is not nearly as ________ as he thinks he is", which translates easily into: 他[根本]沒有他想的那麼+ adj. or variants of this kind of a sentence. Hanlink Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:48 AM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:48 AM The problem is with the English. Your Chinese translated back into English for 他没有我们想的那么聪明 (and 的 is correct here) means "He wasn't as clever as we thought". This is not the same meaning as your original sentence, which as I said did not make too much logical sense anyway. Quote
emma陶藝心 Posted November 5, 2008 at 03:09 PM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 03:09 PM I'm a girl from Shanghai,China.I'd like to help u. If u wanna emphasize that "he is not nearly as _________ as we think he is",u can just say :他裝腔作勢 It doesn't emphasize he's not really"smart","strong"or"nice",It just mean he's pretending to be what he wants to be,but actually he isn't... 我是来自中国上海的女孩。我愿意帮助你。 如果你想强调“他不是像我们想的那样的+(形容词)”,你可以这么说:“他装腔作势” 这不强调后面的形容词是“聪明”,“强壮”或是“人好”,这只强调“他装作他想成为的样子,但他其实并不是那样的。” and...this translation"我们觉得他比他要强壮一些。"is totally wrong. anonymoose Posted November 5, 2008 at 03:30 PM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 03:30 PM "we think he's stronger than he is" I concur that this English sentence is somewhat strange, but nevertheless, translated into Chinese, it should be something like: 我们认为他比他的(真实)能力要强。 I've added 真实 into the sentence in an effort to make it clearer, but still, as they say, garbage in, garbage out. HashiriKata Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:36 PM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:36 PM (edited) "we think he's stronger than he is" I think I've got what Xiao Kui is about. S/he's just put "we think" at a wrong place in the sentence. What s/he intended to say may be: "he's stronger than we think he is". Then the translation should be: 他比我们想的要强 and "he's not nearly as strong as we think he is" should then be: 他并没有我们想的那么强。 Edited November 5, 2008 at 04:53 PM by HashiriKata Quote

heifeng Posted November 5, 2008 at 10:03 PM Report Posted November 5, 2008 at 10:03 PM (edited) my short (5 second & very koutouyu) cookie cutter answer (or attempt at one), based on this The adjective doesn' matter it can be smarter, harsher, etc. What i want to emphasize is that though he very well may be __________, he is not nearly as _________ as we think he is. Thanks! (XX是XX , 但是)YYY(并)没有我们(起初/曾经/other time frame)想象的那么XX(or subsitute XXX with another adj 厉害,牛,差, or whatever, depending on what XX is) ------------ edit: orrrrr,a kinda related format 尽管xxx很yyy但是并不如(远不如)我们所想象的 (那么zzz) Edited November 6, 2008 at 01:34 AM by heifeng Quote
