ChristopherB Posted November 6, 2008 at 02:43 AM Report Posted November 6, 2008 at 02:43 AM Not sure how many people are into this kind of stuff here, but I'm after recommendations for bands in these genres. As far as I know, there aren't many. How big is the extreme metal scene in China? I did find one one pretty damn cool black metal band, called Zuriaake: http://www.myspace.com/zuriaake Quote
gougou Posted November 6, 2008 at 03:00 AM Report Posted November 6, 2008 at 03:00 AM I don't listen to it myself (wouldn't even know the difference between black metal and death metal...), but 13 Club in Beijing has a lot of metal concerts. You might wanna check out the bands listed on their Myspace. Quote
Flying Pigeon Posted November 6, 2008 at 09:01 AM Report Posted November 6, 2008 at 09:01 AM Hi, Two bands come to mind: Voodoo Kungfu and Tongue. You can check out their pages on http://wiki.rockinchina.com http://wiki.rockinchina.com/index.php?title=VOODOO http://wiki.rockinchina.com/index.php?title=Tongue I've only heard one song by each band. The song by Tongue has a kind of a techno/funky feel to it, but it rocks. You can hear a sample here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001480DFY/ref=s9kart_t2_img0-rfc_g1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=top-1&pf_rd_r=03RABK5GCMF2WS8JXDZQ&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=371964601&pf_rd_i=beijing%20band The song by Voodoo Kungfu is like a primal dirge. You can hear an excerpt here: http://www.amazon.com/Look-Directly-Into-Sun-China/dp/B000W4HFYI Hope this helps. Rock on! Dean Quote

the_haunted_boy Posted December 28, 2008 at 12:56 AM Report Posted December 28, 2008 at 12:56 AM There is a lot of black metal and death metal, but its mostly underground, so I usually just browse myspace and look for the Chinese metal. Quote

Prodigal Son Posted June 4, 2009 at 09:23 AM Report Posted June 4, 2009 at 09:23 AM there are a ton of heavy metal bands in China - for some reason they seem to far outnumber every other kind of rock music (from what I have gathered). if you have a local venue for bands in a major city you'll probably see a large number of metal bands there. one of my personal favorites is 37.5 although I'm not specifically familiar with too many. I was at a rock festival in Chengdu a few years ago and there were literally like 30+ Chinese metal bands there. Quote
gato Posted June 4, 2009 at 09:32 AM Report Posted June 4, 2009 at 09:32 AM there are a ton of heavy metal bands in China - for some reason they seem to far outnumber every other kind of rock music (from what I have gathered). if you have a local venue for bands in a major city you'll probably see a large number of metal bands there. Because in China a lot of things in extremes, whether it's movies (blockbusters vs. movies that can't show in theaters) or music (pop vs. death metal). I think the reason is either that either you are with the mainstream government-approved program, or you are not. The heavier the government interference, the less room is there for a middle way. Music (in terms of music radio station licensing) and movies (in terms of theater showing approvals) are two areas that the government has a heavy hand in. See this article, in which an official is quoted as doubting that a rock radio station would ever be approved. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/world/asia/25shanghai.html The Sound, Not of Music, but of Control By HOWARD W. FRENCH Published: October 25, 2007 Zhang Zhuyi, an official of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, said he doubted that a radio station dedicated to rock 'n' roll would be allowed in China. "New radio stations need approval, and regulators would consider whether the content fits with social trends and national policy," Mr. Zhang said. Quote
