Rwgraff Posted November 6, 2008 at 04:34 PM Report Posted November 6, 2008 at 04:34 PM This is more of a request for information, I am new to these boards and am actually looking for information regarding how Diversity is integrated in the Chinese education system. I have looked through many sources and nothing seems to be coming up. If anyone has experience or knows of hard numbers that will show me and explain how diversity is taught would be great. Ideas and subjects are looked for but not limited to: race, ethnicity, racism, stereotyping, sexism. Any information in regards to the teachings of these subjects and how Chinese students learn about them would be greatly and deeply appreciated. Just remember not limited to the above sources, and if you have primary sources or expierence that would be great! Thanks a ton everyone! Ryan Quote
BrandeX Posted November 7, 2008 at 04:19 AM Report Posted November 7, 2008 at 04:19 AM (edited) have looked through many sources and nothing seems to be coming up I can't be entirely sure, but having worked in various public and private schools, I think that may be because it isn't taught. This reminds me of earlier this week during a private class when I was having an open chat part of class with my mid 30's career professional student. When replying to a question regarding mixed race marriages, he recounted a story about how he was literally frightened the first time he really noticed black people and saw the palms of their hands were white. That may or may not be a good example of the average citizens knowledge and interaction with non-Chinese, but the expression of fear upon seeing other race people described an interesting phenomena nonetheless. Many times very young Chinese children here have started crying upon seeing myself, or other foreign friends. Edited November 7, 2008 at 04:20 AM by BrandeX typo Quote
chen88 Posted August 8, 2009 at 06:46 PM Report Posted August 8, 2009 at 06:46 PM Learning diversity in the Chinese classroom by Shane N. Phillipson This book addresses how handicapped children are accommodated and incorporated into the Chinese education system. It also includes lots of fascinating explanations of learning in the Confucian heritage culture. You can preview the book on Google Books. If you just want answers, talk to college-aged international students from China. If you are looking for statistics, email Chinese language professors in the United States and ask them to direct you to resources. Quote
