baboo Posted November 7, 2008 at 01:13 PM Report Posted November 7, 2008 at 01:13 PM This might be a repeated post but just now I could not find the thread I just posted so here i am again My mom is planning to have her renal transplant in Nanning because we live in Hanoi, quite near to that region of China. However we are clueless about where to start. I could not even find a single email addresses of some hospitals in Nanning online. Wonder if they even have Do you have any idea or suggestion where we should start i.e. what sort of document for foreigners to be accepted for local surgery, how to contact the hospital representatives? It'd be the best if you can provide me with emails of some hospitals in Nanning. I did google but the result is 0. My lousy searching skill. I'm most interested in First Affiliated Hospital to Guangxi Medical Uni. Any info about that place ? If you have other alternatives, just tell me. I can savour any info right now. Thank you Quote

roddy Posted November 8, 2008 at 06:44 AM Report Posted November 8, 2008 at 06:44 AM You're unlikely to get very far by email, I'm afraid. I'd try making enquiries by phone and see how far you get - probably not very far if you can't speak Chinese. Realistically I think you're going to need to physically turn up and speak to someone. You might have better results with hospitals in Guangzhou, Shanghai or Beijing which are more used to dealing with foreign patients. I don't think any documents are necessary - just the cash. Quote
liuzhou Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM Report Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM I just spoke to my dear friend here in Liuzhou (just up the road from Nanning), who is the head of the Foreign Affairs Office and official translator in our local hospital. She confirmed what I thought. The hospital linked to by Igna2000 is the best in Nanning but they do not have a Foreign Affairs office or translators. The university to which they are attached does, but the staff there are administrators in the university and have no medical knowledge. Nor is the link that close. Some doctors have studied abroad and speak some English, but for your needs, I doubt it will be enough. She is fairly convinced that none of the other hospitals have English speaking staff either (although technically all doctors should pass an English exam.) If you want to travel past Nanning a little, I can put you in touch with my friend in Liuzhou. She is an excellent medical translator and has kept me alive against all the odds. The only documents required are a passport and visa (obviously) and a load of the pink documents with a certain Chairman's face on. Quote
baboo Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:59 AM Author Report Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:59 AM Thank you for all of your helps. They really give us more options than the few we are considering right now. @liuzhou: I'd really be grateful if you can put me in touch with your friends. We need to get more medical insight into the hospitals before we can make any decisions. And a professional translators would be great ! If everything sails smoothly, maybe I'd travel to China by the end of next month. Quote

mr.stinky Posted November 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM Report Posted November 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM any reason other than proximity that you want to go to nanning? i've been generally unimpressed with the quality of chinese medical services so far, and would be afraid to have anything serious done here. i did have a minor procedure perfomed in kunming, but that was at richland hospital, a canadian joint venture. as for me, i will be travelling to india in january for surgery. baboo Posted November 14, 2008 at 02:22 PM Author Report Posted November 14, 2008 at 02:22 PM @ mr. stinky: Climate is one of the concern because my mom could not stand very very cold weather. That's the reason why we crossed out Beijing although it's like one of the best. We also face time constrain because my mom wants the operation to be done by this year. So everything must be swiftly fast. We've known some people having kidney transplant in Nanning and sorta have some contacts but I'm not so sure about their experience during the operation period. So I don't know anything about the quality of the hospital either. Totally clueless. Just follow suit We also have difficulty in communicating in Chinese. My mom knows a little but surely not enough for this sorta serious business. India might be a little too far and strange for us. All the traveling, lifestyle and such. So I think Chinese still remains our top choice. Anyway, Is there any really good International Hospital in the Southern part of China? Just ask for reference. Thank you Quote
mr.stinky Posted November 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM Report Posted November 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM some of the indian hospitals are set up for expats, especially those without insurance back home. highest quality standards and the doctors all speak english. no scheduling problems, no waiting list. no culture problems either, pick up from airport, direct to hospital, 10-day stay, followed by two-week recuperation at a nearby resort. i haven't been to nanning yet (three hours by train) so i can't speak for the hospitals there. you should try to contact "liuzhou" for particulars. here's the website for richland hospital in kunming: http://www.intrh.com/english/Index.htm good luck! skylee Posted November 15, 2008 at 12:19 AM Report Posted November 15, 2008 at 12:19 AM I am just curious. Where will the replacement kidney come from? I think people have to spend a long time waiting for a matching kidney from doner. Is the OP going to donate his/her own kidney to the patient? I've heard many cases where a parent donate his/her kidney to a child (like this). But I would assume that would still involve plenty of testing and take plenty of time. It is not just find a hospital and get a transplant, not that simple, right? Quote
roddy Posted November 15, 2008 at 02:04 AM Report Posted November 15, 2008 at 02:04 AM You might want to look at Guangzhou / Shenzhen - they're in the south, and being larger cities will have a wider range and presumably better quality of hospitals. Quote
