Lip reading - is it possible in Chinese?

This is an interesting topic. I'm curious if the flattening out of the tones is similar to what naturally occurs over the phone due to the phone's reduced frequency range.

I am partially deaf. (high pitched sounds are at best unclear if not inperceptable)  I was only diagnosed last year as I was subconsciously lipreading.

My spoken Chinese is decent... copying mouth movements works.   I'm just really bad listening to women on the phone.
