Learning Mandarin as a prequel to Cantonese

Talking about raining on someone's parade.

No need to look that far into the future. No one is suggesting that the OP should throw everything aside and focus on learning Chinese, least of all the OP himself. Nothing wrong with showing some interest in his GF's language and culture, if he finds a class he can learn a little bit of Chinese, no doubt to the delight of his GF and her family. What can possibly be wrong with that?
