pamokkha Posted June 27, 2004 at 11:41 PM Report Share Posted June 27, 2004 at 11:41 PM Hello, i am currently trying to read 中国农民调查. And right in the beginning i stumble into problems. How would you translate the following: 在现实与目标的夹缝中 ? I tried, "The gap of reality and target/goal". But i am not sure about the "在...中"-construction. Hope someone can help. Thanks, Florian
shibo77 Posted June 28, 2004 at 12:31 AM Report Share Posted June 28, 2004 at 12:31 AM 在现实与目标的夹缝中. (在)(现实)(与)(目标)(的)(夹缝)(中). 在[现实与目标]的夹缝中. 在{现实与目标的}{夹缝中}. 在现实与目标的夹缝中. (At)(reality(present+real))(and)(objective(sight+target))('s)(gap(place between+slit))(middle). At reality and objective's gap('s) middle. The gap of reality and target/goal. The gap between the reality and the objective. -Shibo

roddy Posted June 29, 2004 at 03:18 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2004 at 03:18 PM This is the title of the preface, so there isn't a previous or subsequent sentence. If you search Baidu or Google for the phrase you'll get the whole preface to read. I'd translate it as The chasm between reality and ideals which doesn't include the 'zai . .. zhong' bit, but hey . . . The China Study Group were translating this. Not sure how far they got. Guest Yau Posted June 29, 2004 at 03:52 PM Report Share Posted June 29, 2004 at 03:52 PM I'd translate it as The chasm between reality and ideals which doesn't include the 'zai . .. zhong' bit, but hey . . Yeah, it's a flawless translation that accurately expresses the "在.... 中" structure.
