berylchan, have you lived all your life in Guangzhou? I spent a short spell there in 1987/88 studying at Jinan Daxue (Keinam Daihok ?). Would be interested to know how the city has changed in these almost twenty years. Suppose you have lots of scyscrapers and highways now and the cost of living must have gone up quite a lot. Used to be very cheap then a big bottle of Zhujiang Beer would cost something like 1-2 rmb and eating out next to nothing.

Hey, I will be living in Guangzhou soon if that counts!! :D I'll be there for 6 months from late August to study Chinese.

Sure that GuangZhou has changed a lot. And it keeps on changing everyday, especially the public construction... ZhuJiang beer is still cheap at 2-3 RMB. I mean in those stores, not bars. But the cost of living is surely going up....

I am here for almost 7 years and I like this city very much...

Hi Junior, when will you come to GZ then?

I'll be studying at 中山大学 next semester. I'm not exactly sure what date I'll get there yet (still waiting on info from the uni), but I think semester starts on the 28th of August or around then so I'll be there by then anyway...

Beryl, have you learned to speak Cantonese (that is I assume you didn't before you went to GZ), and do you find it odd / inconvenient that GZ is a Cantonese-speaking city?

Just curious. 8)

Hi, I didn't speak cantonese before I came to GZ. But I know cantonese from TV programs. Then, to enjoy this city, I have to speak it's language. And now I am familiar with it. How about you? You are from HK?
