Nibble Posted November 23, 2008 at 10:49 AM Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 at 10:49 AM I'm living in Taiwan, so I generally type in traditional, but I never bothered to learn touch-typing in zhuyin fuhao, so I use Google Pinyin when I'm booted into Windows, and it works quite well. However, I've recently been using Xubuntu more and more, and I'm trying to find a decent replacement for GPY. I find that 智能拼音 works great for simplified characters, just like GPY and Sogou; however, if I switch it to traditional, it can't recognize even simple compounds like 語言 or 這個, and I have to search through rows and rows of characters to find the ones I want. The IMEs designed specifically for traditional characters do not seem to support pinyin input. Any ideas?
skylee Posted November 23, 2008 at 11:03 AM Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 at 11:03 AM I write in traditional script too. If there is something good (pinyin input, traditional output) for windows, please also share.
Nibble Posted November 23, 2008 at 11:24 AM Author Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 at 11:24 AM For Windows, I use Google Pinyin in traditional character mode. I think it just uses its simplified database and converts the characters to traditional, so there are some problems. For example, a few characters such as 后 are also used in traditional but for different things, so you have to manually change 以后 to 以後, although GPY will remember your choice in the future; and it's impossible to type the 台 in 台灣 unless you temporarily switch back to simplified mode. Aside from that, though, it works very well for me. I can type a complete sentence without tones, and most of the time it can guess every character correctly for me. BrandeX Posted November 23, 2008 at 12:41 PM Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 at 12:41 PM Is there a viable ime other than scim?
flameproof Posted November 25, 2008 at 04:23 AM Report Share Posted November 25, 2008 at 04:23 AM I use SCIM. But RedHat had a tool called miniChinput. No idea if that's still supported, but I also saw it in connection with GenToo, shouldn't be too old then. I never tried it.
ipsi() Posted November 25, 2008 at 09:28 AM Report Share Posted November 25, 2008 at 09:28 AM Hmm... According to the SourceForge page for miniChinput, it was last updated... in 2003. See: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=76824 Of course, it could have just moved somewhere else, but that's not a promising sign. PS: I was really surprised that there is very little support for SCIM on OpenSuse (which I just try now). Luckily it nearly installed by itself.
