xiexieniii Posted December 7, 2008 at 08:23 AM Report Posted December 7, 2008 at 08:23 AM I understand a little bit of Mandarin, but not enough to decipher this entire paragraph. Can someone please help me understand the parts I left blank? I want to learn all the words the reader is using so I can recite the entire paragraph myself. The full audio file is here: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ealac/chinese/audiolab_level1/1_N/L.9a.mp3 Very sorry if the paragraph is a little long. I understand most of what she is saying, but if I could just decipher the pinyin she is using, I could look it up in my dictionary. Thank you so much in advance!! wo jiao wang xiao ying. huzhe Posted December 7, 2008 at 12:07 PM Report Posted December 7, 2008 at 12:07 PM I'm a chinese,我来给你翻译一下吧: wo jiao wang xiao ying. (I'm Wang Xiao ying) jin nian, er shi ba sui. (and 28 years old) xian zai zai mei guo [xi bu de yi suo??] da xue, xue yin yue. (Now, I'm learning music in an university of west USA) wo xihuan kan shu, [chang ge?], [pan qin?(tan qin)(弹琴)] ye xihuan [nu xing?( what's means? I think there is a mistake)]. (I like to read book, to sing, to play musical instrument, and also like to ? ) wo hai hui zuo cai. (In addition, I can cook.) zhong guo cai, [yi da li?] cai, fa guo cai wo dou hui zuo. (Chinese meals, Italian meals, French meals, I can cook them all.) yi qian wo chang chang [gei da li de ren??] zuo fan. (before I often cook food for ???.) suiran wo [ren bu cuo???], pengyou ye hen duo. (although I am excellent, and also have many friends.) keshi xian zai hai meiyou nan pengyou. ( now, I still don't have a boyfriend.) suoyi wo fumu chang chang [wei zhi dian shi zhao ji???] (therefore, my parents often worry about that.) [xia ga q(x)ing xi wo yao hui taiwan] kankan wode jia ren [he pengyou??] (Next week, I will be back to TaiWan to visit my families and friends.) ting shuo wo de [qing xi men xiang li you(yong) zhei ge ji hui gei wo jie shao dui xiang (lao)[delete "lao"??] (It is said that my families want to introduce a girlfriend for me with the chance.) renzhe Posted December 7, 2008 at 03:59 PM Report Posted December 7, 2008 at 03:59 PM Yeah, I didn't catch everything the first time either. duixiang = partner yi suo daxue = a university (suo is the counting word) meiguo xibu = western USA Quote
xiexieniii Posted December 8, 2008 at 12:51 AM Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 12:51 AM Thank you guys so much for your help. Would xian zai zai mei guo xi bu de da xue also be correct? Can I omit yi suo? And, wo yao hui taiwan -- I thought "yao hui" means "want to return"? Does yao also mean something else? Quote
roddy Posted December 8, 2008 at 02:37 AM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 02:37 AM If you omit 一所 you run the risk of saying something like 'I'm at the western US's university' - ie implying that there's only one. 要 can also be used for the future - 我要回 I'm going to go back . . . Quote
xiexieniii Posted December 8, 2008 at 04:47 AM Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 04:47 AM I see. What about "wo xian zai zai mei guo da xue" or "wo xian zai zai yi suo mei guo da xue" -- are either one of those acceptable sentences? Quote
renzhe Posted December 8, 2008 at 01:23 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 01:23 PM Neither of those sounds right. The first one sounds like your going to "America University", where the "America" is part of the name. In the second sentence, I'd say "Wo xianzai zai yi suo meiguo de daxue". To turn "America" to "American". Quote
huzhe Posted December 8, 2008 at 01:51 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 01:51 PM 美国的大学 and 美国大学 means same in chinese, sometime "的“ may be omitted in chinese. Quote
