werks Posted December 8, 2008 at 09:01 AM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 09:01 AM hi guys, im currently studying in guangzhou, and i am to leave to hong kong for 1 week, and resuming my studies. i have a residence permit, but unsure if i can leave and come back to china. before i got here, i was on a L category visa with 2 entries, and when i arrived i applied for a recidence permit as i needed to stay for more than 60 days. so my question is, if i hold a residence permit, am i allowed to go to hk and come back? trevelyan Posted December 8, 2008 at 12:11 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 12:11 PM Temporary residence permit or permanent residence permit? If you are on a Z visa (work visa) your visa is technically only valid for 30 days after entry, at which point you are supposed to have a residence permit. That document is used for exit/entry and goes in your passport. If you have a tourist visa or F visa you are supposed to get a temporary residence permit (a slip of paper) from the local police department. That document will not get you back into the country. liuzhou Posted December 8, 2008 at 03:10 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 03:10 PM What do you mean by "residence permit". From the circumstances you describe, it seems unlikey thatyou have one. A residence permit is stuck inside your passport like a visa. That allows you multi-entry during its validity. Looks like this: Anything else won't allow you to come and go. Quote
Senzhi Posted December 8, 2008 at 05:19 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 05:19 PM To answer the question straight as it was posted: a residence permit allows you unlimited exits/entries to/from any country, as long the permit itself has not expired. That includes Hong Kong. And yes, it is possible to get from an L to a residence permit, although not via legal procedures. I had the same: L, via F to residence permit. I came in here on an L and had never had to leave since. I assume it's called 'guanxi' (although my employer's, not mine) Quote
BrandeX Posted December 8, 2008 at 06:16 PM Report Posted December 8, 2008 at 06:16 PM Hmm my 2nd L "visa" (obtained inside China) looks exactly like the one pictured above. (the one I got when in the US is slightly different), I don't think it necessarily equates to a resident permit though (in my case), but I have unlimited stay durations and entries as well. Quote
liuzhou Posted December 9, 2008 at 04:21 AM Report Posted December 9, 2008 at 04:21 AM (edited) Hmm my 2nd L "visa" (obtained inside China) looks exactly like the one pictured above. I bet your L visa didn't have"Residence Permit" written on it like the one pictured. Edited December 9, 2008 at 03:00 PM by liuzhou Quote
BrandeX Posted December 9, 2008 at 11:07 AM Report Posted December 9, 2008 at 11:07 AM Yep you are right, I didn't notice the small print at the top, it indeed says "visa" on mine. Quote
leeovisa Posted December 10, 2008 at 05:19 AM Report Posted December 10, 2008 at 05:19 AM Residence Permits (for work or for study) are kinds of China visas. They are multiple-entry ones. Whatever visa you have (L, F, study visa, work visa), you need to register in the local police station if stay in an aparment to get the Registration Form of Temporary Residence (http://www.cn-visa.com/image/Registration_Form_of_temporary_residence.jpg). If you stay in a hotel/ hostel, the staff there will register for you. Werks, Just make sure your visa is like the picture Liuzhou put. Purpose of Residence 学习 Quote
