Outofin Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:25 AM Report Posted December 21, 2008 at 04:25 AM Has anyone watched it? It has accumulated enough positive reviews on douban. I'm expecting something similar to Fearless. I'm going to watch it. Quote
scoff Posted December 26, 2008 at 04:46 AM Report Posted December 26, 2008 at 04:46 AM Saw it last night. It was good. Go see it. I don't think this is a spoilers thread so I'm going to leave it there. Quote
Outofin Posted January 1, 2009 at 03:45 AM Author Report Posted January 1, 2009 at 03:45 AM Saw it. An average story but, a lot of good fights! As I've expected, yes, the movie is comparable to Jet Li's Fearless. His quick hits don’t seem powerful and look a little funny. But I wonder if this has practical use. Do quick hits on the chest cause heart failure? I particularly paid attention to the soldier hit on the chest. He twitched, and then passed out. Horrible. Quote
ABCinChina Posted January 5, 2009 at 01:51 AM Report Posted January 5, 2009 at 01:51 AM I just bought this one and will be watching it tonight. Good to see that it will be OK. I fell asleep watching the 京劇 movie about 梅蘭芳 so I'm looking forward to this one. Quote
roddy Posted January 5, 2009 at 02:06 AM Report Posted January 5, 2009 at 02:06 AM Got this downloaded, so it's on the schedule to watch . . . Quote
constantine Posted January 5, 2009 at 09:16 AM Report Posted January 5, 2009 at 09:16 AM Watched it. A good Kungfu film. He's Bruce Lee's Master.Outofin, you can have a test and then know whether the咏春拳 has practical use or not, Quote
ABCinChina Posted January 6, 2009 at 01:46 PM Report Posted January 6, 2009 at 01:46 PM I just finished the movie. Overall it's one of the better Chinese action movies I've seen for a while. Somehow I think if this one is watched on Youku, then the action won't seem as captivating. Quote
skylee Posted January 11, 2009 at 01:00 PM Report Posted January 11, 2009 at 01:00 PM I saw the film today and I think it is not bad (though I will not see it again). The big house is just BEAUTIFUL and Donnie Yan looks so urbane and graceful in his long robe (actually his role is very likeable). I have only one complaint - the last fighting scene. It is just unconvincing. There is simply no way that they can get away. The Japanese only need to shoot all of them, Ip and all the witnesses. But it is a story so we just have to accept it. Overall a nice film. Quote
roddy Posted January 12, 2009 at 08:11 AM Report Posted January 12, 2009 at 08:11 AM I tried to watch this last night, but fell asleep. No reflection on the film I think, I just fell asleep. But before drifting off I managed to agree with Skylee - the house, and the sets in general, are fantastic. Quote
HerrPetersen Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:22 PM Report Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:22 PM Watched it - good entertainment. So who else are vaild "bad guys" in Chinese action movies except the Japanese? Quote
roddy Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:45 PM Report Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:45 PM Nationalists, if there aren't any Japanese around. Criminals, once the Nationalists and the Japanese have all been dealt with. Oh, and agents for 某 foreign country. Quote
renzhe Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:56 PM Report Posted January 30, 2009 at 01:56 PM I'd say it depends on the time period. In Song dynasty shows, it's the Jurchens (Jin) and the Khitan (Liao), sometimes Koreans (Koryo/Gaoli). Dali and Song are the good guys. In Ming dynasty shows, it's Mongols and Japanese pirates. In Qing shows, it's usually the Qing dynasty itself (often in the form of corrupt officials), but also the British, Americans and the French (the imperialists). Tang dynasty... hrm... I haven't seen enough of those, I'll have to look it up... Quote
liuzhou Posted January 30, 2009 at 02:52 PM Report Posted January 30, 2009 at 02:52 PM I was forced to watch it over the holiday. Some good acting and a potentially interesting story, utterly spoiled by ridiculous over-choreographed pretend so-called kung-fu every five minutes. Quote

Outofin Posted January 30, 2009 at 07:00 PM Author Report Posted January 30, 2009 at 07:00 PM If the only thing Ip Man could do was to protect factory workers from hungry thugs in a war-torn country, audience would ask, "what's the matter with you, hero?" Quote
winniebree Posted March 27, 2009 at 04:27 PM Report Posted March 27, 2009 at 04:27 PM I love the fighting scenes in the movie. Felt sorry for the Japanese general in the movie. I heard the actor who played the role got a a minor concussion in one of the fighting scenes. Quote
renzhe Posted May 9, 2009 at 10:32 PM Report Posted May 9, 2009 at 10:32 PM I've just watched this (in high definition ) and I really liked it. Of course, it's not terribly realistic, but it should be taken for what it is -- a gongfu movie. The fighting scenes are great, and it's one of the better gongfu movies in recent years, comparable to Fist of Legend and Tsui Hark's Wong Feihung movies. I believe Sammo Hung did the fight choreography for this one, and it shows. Quote
Lu Posted May 13, 2009 at 08:03 PM Report Posted May 13, 2009 at 08:03 PM I agree, fine kongfu movie. Story is neither very deep nor very realistic, but the fighting is great, and that's the main point. Quote
LurvJenny Posted April 19, 2010 at 09:49 AM Report Posted April 19, 2010 at 09:49 AM I really enjoyed this movie (and I hardly watch Chinese action movies). It took me a while to find the English name (as I only know how to pronounce the Chinese name). But yes, I recommended all my friends to watch it. Quote
skylee Posted April 19, 2010 at 10:11 AM Report Posted April 19, 2010 at 10:11 AM The sequel, IP Man 2, will be shown on 29 April. Trailer -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrhNQXX2XTg Quote
