Spirit-Mediums in the Chinese World

Here in Singapore, as well as in Malaysia, Taiwan, HK and much of southern China, Taoism is practised with a great deal of rituals involving spirit-mediums. These are men who become possessed by gods or deities such as the Monkey God, Ji Gong, Guan Yin or Hei Bai Wu Chang, during ceremonies or festivals. In a possessed state, they behave as though they are the gods themselves and are the medium or intermediary between the gods and the believers. Do such phenomena exists in Northern China? Or is that mainly a phenomena among people of southern Chinese descent, such as the Min-nan/Hokkien and Cantonese?

oh yes, during the great c revolution some did say they are possessed by spirits and they refused to work in the field with the rest, refused to praise the great leader etc etc. but after the great c revolution they suddenly become very normal.
