weecheng Posted June 30, 2004 at 01:17 PM Report Posted June 30, 2004 at 01:17 PM Here in Singapore, as well as in Malaysia, Taiwan, HK and much of southern China, Taoism is practised with a great deal of rituals involving spirit-mediums. These are men who become possessed by gods or deities such as the Monkey God, Ji Gong, Guan Yin or Hei Bai Wu Chang, during ceremonies or festivals. In a possessed state, they behave as though they are the gods themselves and are the medium or intermediary between the gods and the believers. See http://weecheng.com/singapore/tanki/index.htm for more info. Do such phenomena exists in Northern China? Or is that mainly a phenomena among people of southern Chinese descent, such as the Min-nan/Hokkien and Cantonese? Thanks for any comments and views. Quote
