semantic nuance Posted December 29, 2008 at 06:50 AM Report Posted December 29, 2008 at 06:50 AM Hi, Does anyone know any website that offers English sentence database with audio clips? Or, is there any website that can pronounce the whole English sentence for you when you input it? I surfed the internet for a while, and couldn't find anything that suited what I need. Maybe I just gave the wrong key words. The reason to search for this is that I've been thinking doing a non-profit project for children in poverty, which hasn't put into practice so far because of lack of computer knowledge. Any help is much appreciated. Quote
skylee Posted December 29, 2008 at 12:34 PM Report Posted December 29, 2008 at 12:34 PM These are perhaps useful -> http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php?sitepal http://desktop.google.com/plugins/i/texttospeech_bijoy.html?hl=zh-TW http://www.freesoft411.com/freeware/text-to-speech.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306902 And try to search "text to speech". gato Posted December 29, 2008 at 04:43 PM Report Posted December 29, 2008 at 04:43 PM Here are a couple of text-to-speech software packages that received good reviews. You probably have to pay to get more natural voices, though. The free packages tend to be more robotic sounding. http://www.freewarefiles.com/ReadPlease_program_4551.html http://www.freewarefiles.com/TTSReader_program_42660.html Quote
semantic nuance Posted December 30, 2008 at 02:41 AM Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 at 02:41 AM Thank you very much, skylee, and gato, for your valuable links. I did try every software you introduced. However, I found the voice of these softwares, except sitepal, too much robotic when I typed a long English sentence. I will search "text to speech" later on to see if I can find more that, if I'm lucky, will sound like a real human voice. Otherwise, I'd have to find real persons (native speakers of English) to do that. A clear voice with accurate pronunciations is good for children's learning langauges. I'd trade my Chinese for real-person English recording then. Perhaps some memebers here would like to do the exchange. If any other memebers know any websites that are what I'm looking for, please keep me informed. Much appreciated! Quote
gato Posted December 30, 2008 at 05:19 AM Report Posted December 30, 2008 at 05:19 AM How about the TextAloud reader using AT&T Natural Voices, which is supposed to sound more natural? TextAloud itself costs about US$30, AT&T Natural Voices an extra US$35. The whole package would be about US$65. http://www.nextup.com/TextAloud/index.html Text Aloud http://www.nextup.com/attnv.html AT&T Natural Voices™ Quote
