*Alice Posted January 10, 2009 at 05:33 PM Report Posted January 10, 2009 at 05:33 PM i've been out of the loop on chinese pop culture (im from canada). When i was in high school, i listened to a lot of Gigi Leung, Faye Wong and Jeff Chang. I like mandarin songs. Can you recommend a few new artists that are worth checking out? thank you in advance Quote
rastafeyd Posted January 11, 2009 at 07:52 AM Report Posted January 11, 2009 at 07:52 AM I'm partial to 轮回乐队 and 张楚, though neither are especially new. Quote
rezaf Posted January 11, 2009 at 08:33 AM Report Posted January 11, 2009 at 08:33 AM There is some good Cantonese music but I personally don't like cheesy Mandarin songs especially those from Taiwan. Anyways you can go tohttp://list.mp3.baidu.com/topso/mp3topsong.html?id=1?top2 . That's a selection of relatively good songs. Quote
*Alice Posted January 11, 2009 at 04:44 PM Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 at 04:44 PM thank you here's a list of (non-chinese) bands I listen to..hopefully it'll give you a better idea of what else i like: sonic youth, yo la tengo, postal service, the pixies... a lot of indie rock. a friend recommended My Little Airport awhile ago. They're pretty good. Quote
*Alice Posted January 11, 2009 at 04:48 PM Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 at 04:48 PM rezaf: thank you for the link! it's a good thing i can still read a bit of chinese Quote
<<恒心>> Posted January 12, 2009 at 03:08 AM Report Posted January 12, 2009 at 03:08 AM Wow, what a BIG topic! There's just so much to love... where does one begin? Oh, right, we're supposed to be helping you with that problem! Well for singers, I like Na Ying 那英, (who happens to be a personal friend of Faye Wong, by the way) and of course there's guys like Jay Chou 周杰伦 and Wang Lihom 王力宏. Deserts Zhang 张悬, and Cheer Chen 陈绮贞 are 'coffehouse/indie singers from Taiwan that I like. Wang Feng 汪峰 is a rock singer from Beijing whose older stuff is worth a listen. As for bands, I was a fan of Sober 清醒 and New Pants 新裤子 back in the day, though SuperVC 果味VC is more up to date. Some of my favorite bands are indie bands from Taiwan- SodaGreen 苏打绿, Tizzy Bac and Natural Q 自然卷 come to mind. Wu Bai 伍佰 and China Blue are another favorite. Below is a small, random selection of links to YouTube videos-- good luck getting back into Chinese music and let me know if you'd like links to some good radio stations! New Pants video for 'Dragon Tiger Panacea' 龙虎人丹 http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws05MsrxF7M Tizzy Bac video of 'Puss in Boost, Madame!' 鞋貓夫人,Madame!!! http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=_3aaYf5FlU0 SodaGreen- 'Little Love Song' 小情歌 http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=f0Mxc1rClqU Wang Leehom- 'By the Plum Blossoms' 在梅边 http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=FwVqrrr_bPM Jay Chou- 'I'm Really Busy' 我很忙 http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=kv9Eyc7gq5w Quote
renzhe Posted January 12, 2009 at 11:02 AM Report Posted January 12, 2009 at 11:02 AM here's a list of (non-chinese) bands I listen to..hopefully it'll give you a better idea of what else i like: sonic youth, yo la tengo, postal service, the pixies... a lot of indie rock. In that case, you should probably steer far from mainstream pop. For your tastes, I'd definitely recommend PK14, Hedgehog, Happy Avenue, Glorious Pharmacy, Hang on the Box, No Name, Maya, ReTROS. And Cui Jian is oldie but goodie. For more punky stuff, Brain Failure and SMZB. Also check out the podcasts on www.rockinchina.com. Quote
gato Posted January 12, 2009 at 01:22 PM Report Posted January 12, 2009 at 01:22 PM For an indie rock fan, I'd recommend Carsick Cars (they are very much Sonic Youth-inspired) and Xu Wei (许巍). http://carsickcars.com/music/ Carsick Cars 许巍 - 蓝莲花 Quote

renzhe Posted January 16, 2009 at 11:04 AM Report Posted January 16, 2009 at 11:04 AM Alice, I really recommend getting the podcasts from http://wiki.rockinchina.com/index.php?title=Category:Podcasts, especially the rock in china radio show. They are free to download and have songs by many artists I mentioned. I really think you'll like some of them. They also have all sorts of stuff for free download here Quote
<<恒心>> Posted January 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM Report Posted January 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM Yeke Lin: I have to run to work here quick, so I only have time for a quick reply-- I'll return later when I have more time. Radio is tough- I basically ran screaming from pop-dominated mainland radio a while back and pretty much focus on radio out of Taiwan (RSI from Singapore having shut down last summer.) Basically, the good indie punk stuff won't be found on the radio... but that make the search all that more exciting + rewarding, eh? Here's a couple of quick links for the time being... RTI program on the state of Rock: http://www.rti.org.tw/Program/ProgContent.aspx?bid=25&cid=68554 Tag Team Records Podcast Page: http://www.tagteamrecords.com/podcast.php HiNet Page w/all Taiwan stations listed- browse around: http://hichannel.hinet.net/radio/radio.jsp?chid=187 Finally (for radio) Ilike radio has some good programs- on occasion: http://www.bcc.com.tw/prmcast.asp Hito Radio from Taipei might be worth a try: http://hitoradio.im.tv/showtime/onair.php Also, I think given your tastes that you'd love Joyside, Subs, and the Scoff- this compilation is *excellent* Bloodshot Records "Look Directly Into the Sun" compilation- you can download/purchase here: http://www.bloodshotrecords.com/album/look-directly-sun-china-pop-2007 Finally, almost anything on the Modern Sky sub-label Badhead such as Muma and Shetou (Tongue) is worth checking out-- you can order by mail here: http://www.modernsky.com/shop.htm I hope that helps-- I'll try to do more with the radio links later on!
