xue, Good luck to you :) I would say meeting only once a week, no matter how many hours is not the same as meeting three or more times a week, even with less time. Forty total hours is not going to make anyone intermediate, but just keep going and you'll get there. Living Language is a nice place to start, but when they say "begining to intermediate", don't believe them.

There are others, but those are some I know and I think are very good. If you like using a textbook, Japanaese for Everyone is good and popular.

As for studying Japanese after Chinese, I think that makes Japanese much easier. In fact, I think that in the smaller bits Chinese and Japanese grammar are closer than English and Chinese. My Japanese classmates in Taiwan thought so as well. I think Japanese is more difficult than Chinese, but that may just be because I'm a grammar moron.
