I have consulted several dictionaries regarding the pronunciation o f藉 with two options ji2 and jie4 given.

However, I could not find any reference as to what it should be pronounced in this context:

并藉此机会。。。。

Could anyone advice please.

Cheers in advance.

I have managed to find the solution that it should be pronounced jie as it means something else than ji.

My teacher had written “ji” but this must have been a typing mistake.

I would however like to understand if the use of the phrase 并藉此 is a formal expression.

藉 in this context is the same as: 借

借机会 (take this opportunity to...) therefore it's pronounced jie4 :D

I think the phrase is more "藉此机会" - "take this opportunity" than "并藉此". The 并 in this case probably just means "and" so i don't think it would be considered part of a phrase as such.

I suppose it's fairly formal - you often here it in speeches when people take an opportunity to thank certain people, or talk about a certain topic.

藉 is pronounced as jie(4) when it is used to mean 'taking this (as an opportunity)', and ji(2) when it is used to mean 'type of ~':E.g' 书籍 (types of books),国籍 (nationality).

I'm new to this forum and as a Chinese, i wish to help more people to have a better command of Chinese language. Feel free to post any questions online.

Please note that the 籍 in the examples are NOT the same character as the 藉 that the OP asked about. Note the different radicals.

For 藉, take a look at this -> http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/cgi-bin/agrep-lindict?query=%c2%c7&category=wholerecord

For 籍, this -> http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/cgi-bin/agrep-lindict?query=%c4%79&category=wholerecord

The Chinese themselves make mistakes in writing 藉 or 籍 :

Some useful expressions with 藉:

藉新春之际 on the occasion of the New Year

藉此向各位表示谢意 take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all

希望藉此进一步推动环境保护的意识 hope that with this we can further promote environmental protection

藉 is used in Taiwan and 借 is used in China mainland. they are the same but the first one is in traditional Chinese while the second one is simplified. both pronounced as jie4.

the ji2 is only used in word 狼藉 (mess)
