DAVIDVIII Posted January 24, 2009 at 05:32 AM Report Posted January 24, 2009 at 05:32 AM Hey guys, I've been in Beijing for two weeks now, and i've got an apartment just behind BLCU in the mining and technology university. Now that i'm settled down and ready for my one year course in BLCU, i'd like to have my own internet access at home. What i want to is to have a wireless router at home to which i can connect my laptop and i need the speed to be 2MB. Is it possible? how can i do it? Thanks for any help^^ Quote
roddy Posted January 24, 2009 at 08:32 AM Report Posted January 24, 2009 at 08:32 AM Certainly possible, but you'll need to speak to your landlord as he'll likely need to handle it. If an account has been set up previously it's maybe dormant and just needs to be reactivated. Is there a modem lying around? Quote
DAVIDVIII Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:43 PM Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:43 PM Actually there's already a dormant account, and the landlord was going to activate it, but he said that i can't have more than 1MB is that true? Quote
roddy Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:53 PM Report Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:53 PM Certainly on normal Netcom (Unicom now I think, basically the standard Beijing fixed line provider) connections you can - I'm on 2MB, they go up to 8MB on domestic connections although I'm not sure how easy that is in practice. However you might be on some other ISP, or it could be a university connection. Depending on who you're with you may be able to upgrade yourself - I've done it all online, pretty straightforward. The wireless router you probably need to get yourself. I got a free 'home gateway' when I upgraded which does wireless, but doesn't function as a router so it's not much use to me. Quote
DAVIDVIII Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:58 PM Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 at 02:58 PM So to have the same thing as you, Unicom is the one? and everything can be done online? Ah and if i'm with another ISP, can i migrate to Unicom, if then you think it's easy? Thanks Quote
zhwj Posted January 25, 2009 at 02:16 AM Report Posted January 25, 2009 at 02:16 AM Although faster speeds are available in many parts of the city, it often depends on your particular address as to whether the phone company will be able to provide you with high-speed broadband. We told them our street address when we were looking to get a fast connection for our office, and they asked "North or south side of the street?" When they heard we were on the north side, they said we could only get 1Mb. Quote
