What is the meaning of this song?

月亮代表我的心 I have sang this hundreds of time. It is usually translated as "the moon represents my love for you" but what does that mean? Is it talking about the fact that the moon reflects my love just as the moon reflects the light from the sun? Or....if we wrote an English song would we simply say "my love is as true as the light of the moon"? Or some other options? I am interested no only for the sake of this song but in knowing how to translate this word/phrase.

In China, the moon can stand for some emotions like miss,care. When the moon is full, it means reunion. And people feel lovesick when seeing it. 月亮代表我的心 is meaning that i love you so much. Even sometimes i'm not around you, but you can see the moon, which will bring my love for you.

thanks! I appreciated that also. I am trying to find the best way to translate that phrase into English - not necessarily looking at a word for word translation but how a westerner would write a song with the same meaning. "My heart is true, my love doesn't change" that would work in English - it is romantic. But the next sentence...the moon represents my heart? What about the moon? Is its unchanging nature? Can we say "my love is as true as the light of the moon?"

at first ,i think this means she love him very much,because the moon is true,and it rises every night.

then ,i think maybe she just feels a little love of him,because the moon is changeable.

但是好像中国人对此的理解的确不统一，大家都参考一下吧
