AlexBlackman Posted February 23, 2009 at 07:17 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 07:17 AM Hi What is the name of "Windows XP" in Chinese for the sake of immersion, I want to also learn how Chinese Edition is said (中文版?) How would I translate "unmodified version" ie. not the multitude of "improved" stripped down versions availible. Quote
imron Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:49 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:49 AM The name is Windows XP, with the X pronounced 叉 (chā). 中文版 is correct for Chinese edition. Quote
ABCinChina Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:51 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:51 AM 1. I think Windows XP is just called Windows XP. (Just say it with a Chinese accent) 2. Yes, Chinese edition is 中文版. 3. This is just a guess, but if you want an unmodified version, just ask them if it's a 完全版. (XP3) Please anyone feel free to correct me. Good luck! Quote
ABCinChina Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:53 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:53 AM The name is Windows XP, with the X pronounced 叉 (chā). So you would say something like " Windows chā pī "? That sounds so funny! Quote
xiaocai Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:56 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:56 AM So you would say something like " Windows chā pī "? That sounds so funny! Exactly. The first time when I heard it I was like "OMG, it's so..., gay." Quote
gougou Posted February 23, 2009 at 09:01 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 09:01 AM The name is Windows XP, with the X pronounced 叉 (chā).Interesting, I haven't heard that one yet. I always said "XP" and never had any problems. Quote
imron Posted February 23, 2009 at 10:26 AM Report Posted February 23, 2009 at 10:26 AM So you would say something like " Windows chā pī "? Yep, and it sounds quite normal if you hear it enough. If you want to be derogatory, you could say Windows 差屁 I always said "XP" and never had any problems. It usually depends on the English level of the person you're speaking with. If they've got a reasonable grasp of the English alphabet they'll probably use XP, otherwise you're probably more likely to hear 叉P Quote
ABCinChina Posted February 25, 2009 at 05:37 AM Report Posted February 25, 2009 at 05:37 AM Excuse me, I'm looking to Windows 叉P股. Quote
Hofmann Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:19 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:19 AM A bit off topic, but how to you pronounce X光? Quote
imron Posted March 13, 2009 at 03:29 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 03:29 AM exsu guāng. I've never heard the X in this referred to as 叉. Quote
ABCinChina Posted March 13, 2009 at 06:11 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 06:11 AM exsu guāng. I've never heard the X in this referred to as 叉. Hello Imron, may I ask where are you getting this stuff? I've never heard Exsu Guāng, it's always "ex guāng". Quote
imron Posted March 13, 2009 at 06:14 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 06:14 AM Listen to how a Chinese person says X (especially one who is unfamiliar with English pronunciation). They never say it like the English 'ex', there's always a soft 'su'-like sound afterwards. Quote
imron Posted March 13, 2009 at 07:07 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 07:07 AM Just asked a Chinese friend. He says the "Chinese" pronunciation of X is "埃克斯" āikèsī (not quite exsu, but definitely not the English X either). Googling 埃克斯光 turns up not a huge amount of results, but enough to say it's not just my friend who thinks this. Quote
liuzhou Posted March 13, 2009 at 11:51 AM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 11:51 AM I've never heard anything other than "XP". Quote
leigao Posted March 16, 2009 at 10:19 PM Report Posted March 16, 2009 at 10:19 PM Windows used to know as 窗口, but that was back in the 3.11 days I remember. Yeah now mostly they're known as Windows. Quote
