xiaojiang216 Posted February 24, 2009 at 04:20 PM Report Share Posted February 24, 2009 at 04:20 PM 大家好~ I've noticed that sometimes when I try to input Chinese characters into a Word document using FIT (Fun Input Toy) for Mac, it take a very long time. After I type the pin yin for the character I want, it drags for a while until the characters show up, almost like it's in slow motion. I got sick of it and started to use Notepad whenever I write Chinese documents, which doesn't have any problems. Does anyone else have this issue? Any ideas on how to fix it, or should I just use Notepad from now on?
imron Posted February 24, 2009 at 04:53 PM Report Share Posted February 24, 2009 at 04:53 PM I just checked then and don't seem to have the same problem. Have you tried using QIM? Although it's not free, you do get a 10,000 character free trial, and it is a better IME than FIT.
necroflux Posted February 26, 2009 at 04:38 PM Report Share Posted February 26, 2009 at 04:38 PM Ditto on QIM, it's ridiculously fast and with their new sentence pattern recognition engine, vastly superior to any other input method I've ever used. No need to even think about anything else, if you need pinyin input on the Mac use QIM!
xiaojiang216 Posted February 27, 2009 at 03:12 PM Author Report Share Posted February 27, 2009 at 03:12 PM Thank you imron and necroflux! I have indeed looked at QIM when I first got my MBP. I tried the trial version and was very happy with it. I guess I didn't want to have to pay for my IME... bummer! Maybe I will just go for it? If I were to purchase it, would I be able to use it on future computers? Thanks again for your help!
imron Posted February 27, 2009 at 03:36 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2009 at 03:36 PM Yeah, I wish Apple would just buy them out already
necroflux Posted March 1, 2009 at 05:10 PM Report Share Posted March 1, 2009 at 05:10 PM Yeah, the guy put in a lot of hard work on it so I'd say support him and purchase the license. I did so and he's great about updating and improving the software - go for it.

spiff Posted March 3, 2009 at 01:13 PM Report Share Posted March 3, 2009 at 01:13 PM I've just downloaded FIT (to use with editing flashcards and study materials) but my Chinese doesn't stretch to actually understanding the menu options. Can anyone help me by giving me a quick breakdown of the 12 or so items, to save me from laboriously and unreliably translating them? xiaojiang216 Posted March 4, 2009 at 03:33 PM Author Report Share Posted March 4, 2009 at 03:33 PM I have been using QIM for the past few days without a problem. However, it does seem to drag a little on Word from time to time, although not as much as FIT. Strange! Maybe I should resinstall Word? Hi spiff - which 12 items are you referring to? Are you referring to the setup menu?
spiff Posted March 4, 2009 at 03:37 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2009 at 03:37 PM Hi xiaojiang216 - it's the items in the menu bar that you get when you click on the calligraphy brush. When I installed the app package, that icon appeared on my menu bar - I didn't see a setup menu.
xiaojiang216 Posted March 4, 2009 at 04:50 PM Author Report Share Posted March 4, 2009 at 04:50 PM Okay, so when you click on the paint brush, you will see: 英文模式 - English Mode 中文标点 - Chinese Punctuation 全角英文 - (basically makes each English letter take up the same amount of space as a Chinese character) 繁体输入 - Traditional Chinese Input 自定义词语 - User-defined Expressions 输入法设置 - Input Setup 检查更新 - Check for Updates 关于我们 - About Us Hope it helps!
