I have a problem with the subtitles I am downloading from shooter.cn:

When I open them in WordPad they come out garbled like so:

ÎäÊõΪÖйúµÄ¹úÊõ

This is how they look like as subtitles in the movies too.

Please help me fix this so I can see the Chinese characters!

You will need to either set the default non-unicode language to be Chinese, which can be done in: Control Panel->Regional and Language Settings->Advanced and then set the language for non-Unicode applications to be Chinese (PRC), or you can use AppLocale.

Ok. After changing the Unicode setting to Chinese, when I open the .srt file in Wordpad I can see Chinese Characters.

However if I play the movie in VLC player the subtitles look like squares:

▢,▢▢,▢▢▢

Also I installed the AppLocale program (hard to do in Vista) but don't know how to use it once installed....

I always used this programm to fix corrupted files. Goto "programs --> email fixer". Copy paste the stuff back and forth and save your file as UTF8.

There also is an online version. Goto http://www.mandarintools.com/ and chose "Email fixer".

I guess imron's way is more elegant, but if you VLC can't deal with it the way above should still have some merit.

I used VLC for quiet a long time, since I am no fan of codecs to install. But some time ago I switched to the KMPlayer, it's a Korean mediaplayer which does the same as the VLC player but is faster and feels more smooth.

Just set the subtitlefont in the VLC properties to a chinese font and set the encoding to GB (or BIG5 for traditional chars). Best font to use is arialuni.ttf.

Yes, this looks like a font problem. Choose the subtitle font that has the characters you need.
