Weskhan Posted March 7, 2009 at 11:55 PM Report Posted March 7, 2009 at 11:55 PM Hey everyone. I opened my e-mail today to find that I have been accepted for the Critical Language Scholarship (https://clscholarship.org/home.php). They also sent me an e-mail concerning an evaluation that I must do over the phone. The e-mail read that it is about 15 minutes long and is used to determine if they are putting me into the right skill level (I'm doing the intermediate one). So I have a couple of questions concerning this if anybody knows anything about this evaluation. 1) I honestly didn't think I was going to get this scholarship, so I kind of let my spoken Chinese slip quite a bit lately. This is making me really nervous for this evaluation as there is no beginner program for Chinese (only intermediate and advanced). I'm hoping that even if I don't completely meet the intermediate standards, that they won't just drop me. Nothing in the e-mails says anything about this. 2) What kind of things do you think this 15 minute evaluation will have? How do you think I should review my Chinese? Any extra information about this I would really like to know. Thank you! Quote
taobenli Posted March 9, 2009 at 02:59 PM Report Posted March 9, 2009 at 02:59 PM I'm also wondering about this...I was accepted to the Korean program (advanced). I'm wondering what the evaluation will entail (is it a live person or do they just record you?), and I'm also wondering about anyone's past experiences with this program. (I realize that most people here will have information about the Chinese program and not the Korean, but any information about the way these language institutes are set up would be great). I will probably do the program, but I am a little worried about how academic and intensive it will be (especially for grad students). Chinese textbooks tend to be a bit more sophisticated than Korean (because of higher demand, plain and simple), and cover more social issues instead of (gag) glorified festivalized cultural tidbits. If I have to read another chapter on how Korean food is so spicy many foreigners can't handle it, or about what foods are eaten for new year's, I might scream... Quote
Weskhan Posted April 6, 2009 at 04:44 PM Author Report Posted April 6, 2009 at 04:44 PM Well it's official, guess I'm going back to China. Harbin, China to be exact. The ALTA prof. test turned out to be a lady just asking me questions at pretty fast speeds to see if I could understand and respond. Many of the questions were long and were spoken fast, so I couldn't get them. However, there were plenty I did pretty well on. Time to get back to studying Chinese Quote
roddy Posted April 6, 2009 at 04:58 PM Report Posted April 6, 2009 at 04:58 PM Congratulations. Harbin's a great city, let us know how you get on. Quote
