Sam Addington Posted March 9, 2009 at 08:30 PM Report Share Posted March 9, 2009 at 08:30 PM 标准何其重要,又何以重要?在全球化下的当今世界里,似乎是个人人皆知的问题。 Is this all one sentence, or is it two? Could someone please explain the use of 其, 以 The next sentence in the text also has 何等. 但是,公众对于标准究竟何等重要似乎有不同的认识。 These all seem to mean "how important" to me. Your kind help is appreciated. skylee Posted March 9, 2009 at 11:48 PM Report Share Posted March 9, 2009 at 11:48 PM 何其 - stress the extent, here it means that standards are very important. 何以 - means why. 何等 - it is a question on the extent, same as 何其 here.
Sam Addington Posted March 10, 2009 at 03:10 AM Author Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 at 03:10 AM Thank you very much for your help. Would you read the first portion as one sentence ended by the period at the end or as two sentences, the first ended by the question mark and the second ended by the period? I am leaning toward the first option.
skylee Posted March 10, 2009 at 04:02 AM Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 at 04:02 AM IMHO the first sentence is not well written. It seems to mean that, "The extreme importance of standards, and why they are important, seem to be something that everyone knows in the globalised world today". I don't think a question is involved. I think it might be better to understand it like this - "標準何其重要,又何以重要,在全球化下的當今世界裏,似乎是人人皆知的事 / 似乎人所共知"。 The 2nd sentence you quoted makes perfect sense - "But people seem to have different understanding on how important standards are."
