oranabana Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:33 PM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:33 PM Hi all, Would someone be able to tell me if there is a SIM card for mobile phones or SIM contract that allows you to make use of the internet over the GSM network? I know its possible, as I am using this in the UK on O2 (unlimited Web bolt on), but would like to use my Google Maps, Gmail, chat etc when using my mobile in China - with the China Mobile SIM I bought there before. I imagine it could be done, by signing some sort of contract in one of the China Mobile shops (or maybe Uniqorn), but I have no idea at present.Ideally I would like ot make use of internet traffic whenever I need it, without having to pay for time or usage of the connection... mmh Anyone make any sense of this? Thanks Quote
Hedge Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:54 PM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 02:54 PM I use GPRS/EDGE with China Mobile, there is no 3G in China yet. I think I pay 50 RMB for 50mb per month. You can call China Mobile on 10086 to set it up. Quote
oranabana Posted March 13, 2009 at 03:46 PM Author Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 03:46 PM Thanks Hedge... does that meant there is no 'unlimited' package or deal out there? I be mainly in Beijing, so if its something that only works there thats fine.. 50MB seems ok, but I hate to find I owe several hundred RMBs just because I forgot to exit Google maps properly etc... roddy Posted March 13, 2009 at 05:21 PM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 05:21 PM On PAYG there's no unlimited package, if you think you're going to be a heavy user you can get 5GB for 200RMB - see the prices here. Although this says GPRS, I currently get EDGE here in Beijing. Assuming the SIM card you have is PAYG, you'll be able to sign up to a package via the website or the customer service number. If you don't sign up for a package you'll be charged the 0.01元/KB. On PAYG I'm not sure if you even can run up on a huge bill - certainly my Internet stops when my money does. Quote
crjcrj Posted March 13, 2009 at 10:23 PM Report Posted March 13, 2009 at 10:23 PM GPRS service in Beijing is actually quite good and quite affordable. When you get your China Mobile SIM (I suggest MZone), you can go to this site: http://www.bj.chinamobile.com/index/engsite/support/mzone/ (If you are on GoTone or EasyOwn, just select those options from the menu on the left of the page) There, you can see the GPRS package options, and choose the best option for you. There are also other great packages, like 'DongTing' which is 6rmb a month for free incoming phone calls, etc... Quote
