Demonic_Duck Posted April 27, 2015 at 06:24 AM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 06:24 AM Is there any update on this subject? I am still unhappy with sina and would like suggestions of alternatives, preferably not-China based ones but are accessible in China. I think one issue here is that non-China based ones are exactly the ones that are liable to suddenly be blocked with no notice. If the government can't force the administrator of a website to take down content they find objectionable, then if such content appears (and the website is sufficiently widely known) it's liable to get blocked. The only exceptions are websites that have made concessions (i.e. co-operating with the government). @yst: Tumblr isn't blocked (I seem to remember Yahoo is precisely one of those companies that have made concessions?) skylee Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:00 AM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:00 AM My disliking sina has nothing to do with "concessions" etc. I simply dislike the fact that I can't change the dates of the posts (even with the help of Windows Live Writer). And I find Chinese websites generally hard to navigate (small fonts, lots of contents jumbled together). I will take a look at Tumblr and medium.com . Quote
skylee Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:00 AM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:00 AM Tumblr and medium do not seem to be what I am looking for. I guess my idea of what a "blog" is is outdated. 1 Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:27 AM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 07:27 AM I wasn't suggesting that was necessarily your beef with sina, just that with any large foreign website where the parent company isn't sufficiently compliant, there's a risk of it being taken down. At least for the time being, it seems Yahoo is sufficiently compliant, hence there shouldn't be any problems in the near future (though of course it's difficult to predict - even some Baidu services are currently/have previously been blocked in China). oceancalligraphy Posted April 28, 2015 at 05:41 AM Report Posted April 28, 2015 at 05:41 AM How about Wix? It looks like a website platform, and has templates for blogs. 1 Quote
Angelina Posted April 28, 2015 at 11:10 AM Report Posted April 28, 2015 at 11:10 AM You should try self-hosting your blog. I am thinking of doing that. Quote

Demonic_Duck Posted April 28, 2015 at 01:52 PM Report Posted April 28, 2015 at 01:52 PM The homepage loaded well enough for me sans VPN. Not super fast, though my internet connection at the moment isn't that great. Quote
James3 Posted April 28, 2015 at 08:42 PM Report Posted April 28, 2015 at 08:42 PM Not sure how much time you have on your hands, but if you have some time, you could learn how to host your own blog using Wordpress, watching videos on a site like lynda.com. Quote
