China Unicom website leaks iPhone 3G

For all the phones they're showing the phone's original release date instead of when Unicom will have them... sneaky.

One possible timing hint is the mention of MMS, which isn't generally available until OS 3.0 (June timeframe), unless Apple back-ports the feature. Between MMS and no Wi-Fi looks like China will get a "special" firmware from Apple...

It could be that they are showing WCDMA 3G phones in general and not necessarily phones that have contracts with China Unicom.

China Unicom reportedly has said that they are still negotiating with Apple.

If they're taking the Wifi module out, which I think they have to, it'll be (slightly) different hardware.
Not necessarily. I imagine they'd just disable it from the firmware, thus giving them the option to enable it if and when Wi-Fi phones ever get approval.

That's what I used to think they do, but apparently the Dopod phones don't even have the module. Otherwise there'd surely be a market in firmware updates, and I haven't seen one.

I reserve the right to be not right, of course

I thought that the wifi was hardwired in to the chip that ran the phone... so to take it out you would have to replace the chip... and would they do that if wifi was a possiblity in the future? Perhaps they might on second thoughts as the after sales refits would be a good source of revenue...

No, the wifi module is separate from the main (application) chip.

To your point though on the 3G there is a single integrated chip containing both wifi and bluetooth. You can't physically take out one without affecting the other, unlike in the 1st generation iPhone which used two separate chips.

They could:

  1. Disable wifi in firmware as imron mentioned
  2. Take out the entire chip per roddy's suggestion
  3. Modify the circuit board to disconnect just the wifi pins
  4. Replace with a new, pin-compatible bluetooth-only chip
  5. Not install the internal wi-fi antenna
  6. Leave everything in and beg MIIT for a WiFi license

Did I miss any permutation? :D
