HashiriKata Posted March 29, 2009 at 09:06 AM Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 09:06 AM Hi, My laptop seems to have problems with the nciku website and I wonder if anyone here has some idea what might have gon wrong. I'm normally able to listen to the sound there by clicking the word or sentence and also able to get the pinyin displayed by placing the cursor over it. None of these works in the last few days and I see "error on page" displayed at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. I suspected something might be wrong with the javascript thing, so restored my XP to earlier days when I didn't have the problem, I even uninstalled some recent java update but the problem is still there. Anyone has experienced similar problems? Because of this, even some very simple tasks like copying example sentences on display can prove difficult. Cheers, Quote

HashiriKata Posted March 29, 2009 at 11:03 AM Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 11:03 AM Windows XPsp3, Ms IE6 Quote
liuzhou Posted March 29, 2009 at 11:12 AM Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 11:12 AM I can't see any reason. It is working fine for me. Does this happen every time? Why are you using IE6? Get a real browser! Quote
HashiriKata Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:18 PM Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:18 PM Thanks liuzhou! I don't think the problem has to do with nciku site or IE6. It has more to do with something within my laptop, because I tried another laptop, all was fine. With the laptop I'm using, I get "error on page" every time nciku is loaded. This started to happen only from yesterday. Quote
roddy Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:23 PM Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:23 PM If you've already restored back to an earlier point it probably won't help, and you've possibly done it already, but try clearing your cache and hitting CTRL+F5 to force a full reload. It would also be worth trying another browser if possible. Also turn off any browser plugins you have. Quote
HashiriKata Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:43 PM Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:43 PM Thank you Roddy! Sorted! I was about to hit CTRL+F5 as you advised but Windows just took over and did something in the background (clearing out my catch?), so I couldn't do a thing but wait. Once it finished, the problem was also cleared. It's a mystery but all is back to normal now. Cheers to all, I can see the topless lady in nciku now, very happy! Quote
roddy Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:46 PM Report Posted March 29, 2009 at 12:46 PM Perhaps Windows was enjoying the picture a bit too much itself. Not sure what the problem was, and I'd be slightly worried about Windows suddenly doing stuff in the background, but if it's fixed it's fixed. Quote
Prodigal Son Posted April 3, 2009 at 03:31 PM Report Posted April 3, 2009 at 03:31 PM nciku's not working properly for me either - the problem is it's just terribly slow. all other websites seem to be working at normal speed but nciku.com is barely running at dial up speed. I'm in sichuan province, not a problem with the computer, I tried on two Quote
tooironic Posted April 3, 2009 at 10:12 PM Report Posted April 3, 2009 at 10:12 PM the problem is it's just terribly slow. Yeah, that's nciku. It's always been like that. I usually use dict.cn because although it is not as comprehensive - (and has way more dodgy translations) - it's quick and easy. So if I just need a simple definition for a straight-forward word and haven't got time to stuff around with nciku, it's a much quicker option. Quote

tooironic Posted April 4, 2009 at 06:47 AM Report Posted April 4, 2009 at 06:47 AM Indeed, and it would be my favourite online dictionary if it weren't for that problem of speed. I heard they're a Korean company - maybe a server location problem? Quote
liuzhou Posted November 13, 2010 at 02:18 PM Report Posted November 13, 2010 at 02:18 PM nciku has been unavailable or highly error prone for two weeks now. what is going on? Quote
Guest realmayo Posted November 14, 2010 at 02:02 AM Report Posted November 14, 2010 at 02:02 AM If I access it while using a VPN, it's super slow or returns errors. But as soon as a I switch to the 'normal' Chinese nciku works immediately, rapidly. Quote
joshuawbb Posted November 14, 2010 at 07:57 AM Report Posted November 14, 2010 at 07:57 AM I've been seeing the problems too - whenever I click anywhere past the home page, I get the "something's gone wrong" error. This has been on and off for quite a while, I hope their problems aren't too serious Quote
