HeDiWen何迪文 Posted April 7, 2009 at 01:34 AM Report Posted April 7, 2009 at 01:34 AM I'm not sure where to post this but I was positive someone on this forum would know how to help my friend. I have a friend who wishes to come to America with her boyfriend. Her bf will go to University of Michigan college (i think for grad school) and she wishes to come with him, but she will not be able to work. Her bf has/or will apply for an F-2 visa, which will allow him to go to school, but his spouse, her, will not be able to do anything. She has already graduated college and has a stable job, but if she comes to America under the F-2 visa she will lose her job and any possibility of working. I don't know much about visa's so i could not help her but I am wondering what type of visa she should get that will let her bf go to school and let her work here in America. Any help would be greatly appreciated. She's extremely worried and doesn't want to leave her bf. Quote
peekay Posted April 7, 2009 at 05:44 AM Report Posted April 7, 2009 at 05:44 AM If they're not yet married, then she will not be able to get an F-2 dependent visa based on his F-1 student visa status. And as you mentioned, even if she gets an F-2 visa, she will not be allowed to work or even to attend school. Unfortunately there aren't many good options: They can legally get married now, so she can get an F-2 but stop working for awhile. She can become a student herself and apply for her own F-1. She doesn't have to attend the same school as her boyfriend. Depending on her degree and experience, she can try to obtain a work permit, such as through the H-1B visa program (can be quite difficult to get.) She can try to get a J-visa, maybe through a long-term internship program. She can try a combination of the above. I.e., get legally married now so she can come as an F-2, then once in the US she can try to get a J-1 internship or an H-1B and change her status. Quote
demoizelle Posted April 23, 2009 at 06:38 PM Report Posted April 23, 2009 at 06:38 PM Hey! I don't know much about the Visa's, but I think that she should ask the Office of International Programs of the University her boyfriend is going to. They will provide her with all the necessary information. I studied in The US for a year last year (I'm from France) and in the university in which i was the OIP helped MANY Asian students with this kind of issues... Good luck to your friend! Quote
