深愛所擇

己卯年孟秋王繼宗

Lost in translation Hofmann?

Yes, it's difficult to find the right words really, but I'd say it's all about love 愛 , one's "cautious" choice of love 慎擇所愛 and persevering (or whatever) in the depths of love 深愛所擇. Right?

The rest of it 己卯年孟秋王繼宗 is the date & signature

己卯年refers to Chinese lunar year孟秋 should be July or August and as for 王繼宗, well apparently he was a famous calligrapher, see http://baike.baidu.com/view/202241.htm

...No. I would say

"Cautiously select the one to love. Deeply love the one selected."

I was being lazy, planning to leave the Chinese-English translation to someone else.

:clap Very nicely put. I just love it!

P.S. By the way, with your talent, pls don't be lazy next time

王繼宗 is the man who's standing up in the picture at this website: http://udn.com/NEWS/DOMESTIC/DOM5/4788173.shtml

According to the website in Chinese, he's 84.

Picture was posted at the above website on March 14, 2009.

He's teaching the man sitting down, who's 85 how to do calligraphy!

己卯年 = Either 1939 or 1999 and occurs every 60 years. 2009 - 84 = born in 1925, so it's impossible that the calligraphy was made in 1939 [it would be a miracle if he could do great calligraphy at the age of 14!]. So the date should be 1999 [at the age of 74].

孟秋 = first month of Autumn on the Chinese lunar calendar, which begins in the 7th month, which corresponds to August-September.

己卯年孟秋 according to the above logical conclusions would then be August 1999.
