Expressions for describing a picture and writing a simple essay

Well I have my exams in June and I will be asked to describe a picture as part of an oral examination and to write a simple essay about something like"My Year 2009" as part of a written exam.

Therefore I wanted to firstly ask ask you what vocab or phrases one could use to describe pictures and secondly if you could tell me expressions that are like 从前，因此，现今，总之， 等等。 Thus expressions that help one connect phrases and start new paragraphs in such an essay.
