gato Posted April 24, 2009 at 07:57 AM Report Posted April 24, 2009 at 07:57 AM Interview with one of the most prolific translators of Chinese fiction. http://www.dfdaily.com/node2/node31/node2433/userobject1ai162132.shtml 葛浩文(Howard Goldblatt)虽然是西方最杰出的中英文学翻译家,但他长年居住在美国圣母大学所在的印第安纳州,很少来中国。据他自己介绍,有时候一年来一两次,有时候三四年都不来。这次到苏州,是为了出席企鹅中国举办的第二届中英文学翻译研讨班。 在企鹅中国总经理周海伦女士的协助下,《上海书评》顺利地约到了葛浩文。横跨太平洋的长途飞行和排得密密麻麻的日程使葛浩文感到疲惫,然而一谈起文学翻译,他却克服了刚吃过午餐的困倦,变得神采飞扬。 普通的美国读者比较喜欢哪一类中国小说? 葛浩文:所谓的知识分子小说他们不怎么喜欢。他们喜欢的有两三种吧,一种是sex(性爱)多一点。第二种是politics(政治)多一点,他们很喜欢的。其他像很深刻地描写内心的作品,就比较难卖得动,可能美国人就是怕看那个,呵呵,不知道了。 中国有没有很发达的科技小说?要是有的话,会有人买。另外一种就是侦探小说。有一个作家,忘了什么名字了,他已经出了两三本有关北京的侦探小说,写警察破案,抓凶手之类的,我忘记名字了。作者可能住海外,写的背景是北京……(是裘小龙吗?)对对,裘小龙,他的东西据说卖得不坏。 像莫言的小说,一直都卖不出去,除了《红高粱》以外,一直卖不出去。像李锐,写了好多小说,只翻译过一本,《银城故事》。先出了精装本,后来要求出平装,出版社说精装卖得不够多,所以不出平装了。苏童的东西也不太好卖,余华的《兄弟》可能好一些,但是我也怀疑。他那部作品是轰动了,大家都说,哎呀,《兄弟》在国内卖得很火,海外也得到好评,可是会有人买吗?我有点怀疑。 Quote
