roddy Posted May 3, 2009 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted May 3, 2009 at 02:33 PM Does anyone have any recommendations for a video player with functions useful for language learning - I'm thinking specifically of a 'skip back ten seconds' function for when you've just missed something and you need to listen to it again, but it might also be able to slow down recordings in the way that Audacity lets you, or do an A-B repeat for something you want to really drum in (or just can't understand). Wikipedia lists a number with A-B repeat and time / pitch shifting (is that what we're looking for?), but no 'skip back a bit' function. Any ideas? Gleaves Posted May 3, 2009 at 04:17 PM Report Share Posted May 3, 2009 at 04:17 PM Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but VLC and Media Player Classic have shortcuts to skip forward or back a few seconds. You just hit ctrl right or ctrl left. I think the default for Media Player Classic is five seconds, while vlc might be ten. Since so many Chinese files I find are rm or rmvb, I love Media Player Classic with real player codecs. I am constantly pausing with the space bar and hitting ctrl left to jump back, and sometimes ctrl i for a snapshot.
roddy Posted May 3, 2009 at 06:30 PM Author Report Share Posted May 3, 2009 at 06:30 PM Excellent. I actually use MPC (used to use VLC, but had codec issues and it was easier to start again) but didn't realize it could do that. Closer inspection shows that Options>Keys lets you set the keystrokes for small, medium and large jumps forwards or backwards; while Options>Tweaks lets you set the amount of time for those.
