calibre2001 Posted May 10, 2009 at 06:27 AM Report Posted May 10, 2009 at 06:27 AM The book I'm reading seems to use 倒 in the dialogue alot as can be seen below: 陳先生很神,倒不用我們說了。 Is 倒 being used as a substitute for 甚至 here? As in ' Mr Chen is very smart, to the point where there is no need for us to mention anything' Thanks Quote

As in ' Mr Chen is very smart, to the point where there is no need for us to mention anything' I'll hazard a guess, and say that 倒 here signifies a 转折, something along the lines of "Mr Chen is very smart, but (since that's clear to everybody already) there's no need for us to say it" Quote
Don_Horhe Posted May 10, 2009 at 11:15 AM Report Posted May 10, 2009 at 11:15 AM Last week we came across a similar sentence in our 口语 book, the teacher said that 倒, used like that, is the colloquial form of 并 - 倒不用 = 并不用. Edit - I found it and I'll post it here to illustrate my point: 我比较喜欢温柔的、善良的、贤惠的、能体贴丈夫的,漂亮不漂亮倒不是最重要的。 Quote

semantic nuance Posted May 10, 2009 at 03:51 PM Report Posted May 10, 2009 at 03:51 PM I kind of agree with anonymoose and Don Horhe. 倒 here signifies 轉折. A few related examples are illustrated in 林語堂<<當代漢英辭典>>電子版. Adv. conj. (*[dao4]) Nevertheless, after all (=到底): 他倒底說得不錯 what he said wasn't wrong after all;這倒不要緊 after all, this is not so important; on the contrary (=反而): 倒把事情弄僵了 on the contrary, contrary to what you think, the matter has been made worse; 這樣倒好辦 (=反而好辦) as it is, the matter is so much simpler; 倒不如 rather: 倒不如死了乾淨 I'd rather die, it would seem better to die; but: 你說是他,倒不是他 you think it is he, but it isn't; 倒是他太太拿錢出來 (he refused) but it was his wife who put up the money.
