Hi there,

I am new to the forum and I was wondering if anybody could help me out. I just adopted a 2 year old dog that was raised by a Chinese family from puppyhood.

The dog knows how to sit, stay, lie down, etc, but it doesn't know the English commands as they would have spoken to it in Chinese.

I am not sure what dialect they used or if that even makes a difference but does anybody know the Chinese words for:

Sit

Lie down

Stay

Come

Praise (good boy etc)

Heel

Also, if you could type the words phonetically so I can get the pronunciation right that would be very helpful!

All the best.

Well, different dialects make great differences to dogs. Anyway, I will try to tell you how the words below pronounce according to the pronunciation of Chinese mandarin.

Sit

坐下

Zuo4 xia4 (pinyin)

/zo: / /xia: / (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Lie down

躺下

Tang3 xia4 (pinyin)

/ta: ŋ/ /xia:/ (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Stay

别动

Bie2 dong4 (pinyin)

/bie/ / do ŋ / (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Come

lai2 (pinyin)

/lai/ (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Praise (good boy etc)

Guai1 (pinyin)

/guai/ (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Heel

过来

Guo4 lai2 (pinyin)

/go/ /lai/ (International Phonetic Alphabet)

Cheers!

Thank you. I knew the little guy was smarter than he was letting on. Even with my feeble attempt at proper pronunciation he responded correctly to the various commands.

Many thanks.

Dude...No offense...that is not IPA (or not Standard Mandarin). Take it down or correct it please.
