Cool & Soulless

Yes I know young bands like Carsick Cars, Ourself Beside Me, and Snapline, and I like them. They’re so cool, like British or Japanese bands. But... I just read an interview. When they talk about how they’re creating something new and real, and how their stuff belongs to their generation, I feel funny.

I liked those old rockers because they had attitude and great strength, they were honest and serious. I never felt they were cool. These new bands are universally cool but unexceptionally soulless. Heck, what’s the matter with these kids. (Now I sound like an old man.)

Not about music but pertinent: now CCTV is filming 红楼梦 again. After seeing a few pictures of it, I keep my expectation very low. Some ones did it 20 years ago and they did it better than you! How often can people make stuff like 红楼梦 on TV? Yes, probably every 20 years, when a whole new generation grow up. And now they’re going to disappoint us.

It gives me an impression that young kids usually are so hurry to make themselves different, so they make a clear break to the elder generation, where they should have taken essence from. Many times kids believe they can make a brand new world, but in most cases, just a mass comes out. Hehe.

The problem is not about time, but talent on arts, knowledge on Chinese tradition, deep understanding on the original texts of 红楼梦. In my opinion, 李少红 can’t compare with 王扶林 on the key elements above! And now I’m still worrying whither 李少红 can grasp the subtle meaning of 宝玉’s意淫 and put it poetically.

Yes, probably every 20 years, when a whole new generation grow up. And now they’re going to disappoint us.

I don’t feel disappointed. Hehe. Don’t forget Chairman Mao said, “The world is both yours and ours, but it’s yours at the end. 世界是你们的,也是我们的,但是归根结底是你们的” How about let kids have their own way, while keeping our own taste?
