Wàijiāoɡuān Posted May 26, 2009 at 11:57 AM Report Posted May 26, 2009 at 11:57 AM It's not final but I'll probably be going to China this fall so I want to ask you, ppl with experience, what are my best options. I would like to buy a cellphone, a photo camera and a Nintendo DS. 1) What's the best cellphone one can by in China? I'm asking this because there are a lot of models there I've never even heard about. I want it to be a touch phone (I want to draw hanzi with my pen/hands), a smartphone and I want a fairly decent camera (for photos on the go). Brands aren't important. Money is kind of an issue so I'm looking for best buy options. 2) I want to buy a photo camera, a good one. SLR/DSLR for quality photos. Are prices in China cheaper than in Europe? (I'm from Europe, Croatia to be exact). I think I'll get a better deal in China, especially if I have a warranty. 3) I wanna play something and since a PC/console won't do the trick because of my living options, I wanna buy a DS Lite, prefereby a DSi, but I don't know wha the situation with downloaded games regarding the DSi Any and all advices and, more important, links to shop websites, so I can compare prices) is more than welcome. Thank you and I apologize if this has been covered in some previous post. WJG Quote
Shadowdh Posted May 26, 2009 at 01:44 PM Report Posted May 26, 2009 at 01:44 PM I can answer only from my experience re the UK and from the perspective of the old exchange rate that was near 15yuan to £1... 1. Phones, you can buy anything you want and as you have guessed there are several brands that are not on the European radar, but I found the best way to buy was to find a phone brand/model you like then look for the cheapest price... alternatively you might find a brand in China that matches it closely but is cheaper, but watch for things missing like wifi or similar... 2. I got my dslr in China and it was considerably cheaper... but again this was before the recent exchange rate fluctuation. I had an international warranty with it (since run out) but it has caused me no problems and has survived some very inclement weather conditions and some knocks and scrapes (probably more to do with the make than being bought in China... Nikon d70s)... Cannot help with 3 sorry... Quote
roddy Posted May 26, 2009 at 01:51 PM Report Posted May 26, 2009 at 01:51 PM If you can navigate the Chinese, check sites like zol.com.cn, amazon.cn and taobao.com for prices. Even if you can't read Chinese you should be able to put a model number into the search box. Phones, for a smartphone I wouldn't go off-brand - there's too much to go wrong. A dodgy digitizer or OS could make the thing virtually unusable, then there's the potential of a poor battery or power management. And then you've got call quality to worry about. Maybe for a simple call and text phone, but stick to names you know for anything complex. A few people on here are happy with HTC / Dopod devices. DSLR, you'll need to check prices to see. Rayi.cn is one site worth looking at. Do a search on here for DSLR or Nikon and you should turn up some info, although not much of it recent. DS's I don't know. Quote

Hunininki Posted June 2, 2009 at 01:21 AM Report Posted June 2, 2009 at 01:21 AM For number 3, they have a slightly different version of the DS Lite, the DS iQue. It's basically the same but because the Chinese characters take up more room than say English, or Japanese, this is the only version that can play Chinese DS games. It can play American, Japanese, German etc games as well. The DSi isn't out yet in China, by the looks of their official website. The region you buy a DSi in determines which DSi Store you get. For example, if you bought one in America and lived in Australia, you could still download games but they'd have to be the American ones. Quote
