What is the best route for teaching English in China?

Hi All,

In short, here is my story:

I just graduated college and desperately want to teach English in China. I majored in English, but have no prior experience teaching. This is my first time on a BBS and would really just like some general suggestions on how to get from A-to-B.

What are some good websites to look at? What is the best way to get certified? Should I have a job before I leave? How do I know I can trust a placement program? Living expenses? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

Perhaps you might be able to provide an example of how you went about your own process of securing a life in China, teaching English.

Get a job with a company like English First or Wall Street English before you go. If things don't work out at a school don't be afraid to find another job while you are out there. Things become easier once you are out there.

To teach legally, you need a degree which you seems to have. A qualification in TEFL or TESOL is highly desirable, too.

Beware of private schools (few are authorised to employ foreigners) and make sure they give you the documentation to get a working visa BEFORE you come to China. There is no reason a legitimate school can't do so.

Many schools will say to come on a tourist visa then they will change it later. Don't believe them. Some can, most can't. It is illegal to work on a tourist visa.

Ask the school for contact addresses of previous teachers. Again, a responsible school will provide them.
