Translating song lyrics

sniffles

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new here. I'm looking for some assistance in translating the lyrics of a song that appears in a book I'm attempting to read. I'm very new at reading Chinese and some of the lyrics just don't make any sense to me. I've tried using NJStar to interpret them, as well as pasting them into several online dictionaries and a translator, but I'm not able to understand many of the lines.

The book is Jin Yong's 'Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre' / 倚天屠龙记, Chapter 1. It's the song He Zudao sings to Guo Xiang near the end of the chapter. The text I've been reading comes from here: http://www.shuku.net:8082/novels/jinyong/yi/yitian01.html

I'd like to see the pinyin as well as the translation. Thanks for your help.

Here are the lyrics in question:

考槃在澗,

Could this be "Looking at the stream"? Every dictionary I've tried translates 考槃 as 'testing/examining (the) plate', but that doesn't make sense unless it's an idiom.

碩人之寬。

A great man is at ease (?)

蒹葭蒼蒼,

The young reeds are dark green,

白露為霜,

White dew out of frost, or white dew like frost, or white dew as the frost. Or is this referring to the White Dew time period in September?

所謂伊人,

that so-called person/calling that person/that person is called?

在天一方……

Someone was trying to help me with this and says that his copy of the book has this line:

"my book says 在水一方 [zai shui yi fang - by the water side]"

碩人之寬,

a great man is at ease (?)....

碩人之寬……

a great man is at ease (?)....

溯回從之,

My friend again says his copy of the book has different text:

"my book says 溯洄從之 [su hui cong zhi – going upstream from (or toward) a vortex (of water)]"

道阻且長,

the way is always blocked /The road farther down is blocked

溯游從之,

he goes upstream unhurriedly/Roaming upstream or coming from upstream.

宛在水中央……

in the midst of the winding water....

獨寐寤言,

waking from sleep alone,

永矢勿諼,

never to be forgotten,

永矢勿諼……”

never to be forgotten....

1.《诗.卫风.考盘》:考盘在涧,硕人之宽……考盘在阿,硕人之薖。朱熹集传:考,成也;盘,盘桓之意。言成其隐处之室也。后因以盘阿称避世隐居之处。

《传》:“考,成。槃,乐也。” 考槃,就是“成乐”,弹奏音乐。另据《诗经通论》,考槃,是筑成木屋之义。亦可通。

考槃在涧

Playing instrument by water / Built a cottage by water

碩人之寬。

A great man is at ease (?)

硕人是指达人高士,现代大学制度,念完了研究院的Master,叫作硕士。古之硕人比今之硕士却优胜得太多了。

   宽与薖,都是优闲自得之意;

硕人之宽:a hermit is at leisure

所謂伊人,

that so-called person/calling that person/that person is called?

The one called Beauty

溯回從之,

My friend again says his copy of the book has different text:

"my book says 溯洄從之 [su hui cong zhi – going upstream from (or toward) a vortex (of water)]"

道阻且長,

the way is always blocked /The road farther down is blocked

溯洄从之

Chasing her upstream

道阻且长

the way is long and winding

溯游從之,

he goes upstream unhurriedly/Roaming upstream or coming from upstream.

宛在水中央……

in the midst of the winding water....

溯游从之

Chasing her downstream

宛在水中央

She seems sill in the midst of the water

獨寐寤言,

waking from sleep alone,

Stay alone and poetize his ideal

Cheers!
