Outofin Posted June 10, 2009 at 03:55 PM Report Posted June 10, 2009 at 03:55 PM I don't know how to define genres. Folk music I'm referring to is the one-man-one-guitar thing. Sometimes the accompanying instruments are richer but the feeling is still the same. Many don't like it because folk music is too bland. What I like it is that it's the most intimate, candid, and simplest music. Like I said, A society without folk music is a society without soul. A time without folk music is a time without conscience. Best music I discovered lately. This guy is sad, so is his music. His voice is easily recognizable, for he doesn't sing clearly, often with dirty sexual words. Typical folk music, with all its virtues and flaws. A blind singer with a pure heart. (Why do all blind singers have a pure heart?) He can be very critical too. I dare not to listen to his 中国孩子. An over-marketed singer. Not great but a good one. Classic. This suddenly drags us back to 70s and 80s, the golden age of Taiwanese folk music, which then transformed into a prosperous pop music industry. There were a swarm of old school folk musicians. Unfortunately, I know little about that era. I only know the most famous ones. My favorites are 侯德健 and 李健复. Quote
Outofin Posted February 15, 2010 at 03:27 AM Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 at 03:27 AM Two-men group from a small town in Guangzhou. Easygoing and surprisingly enjoyable music. I don't know what they are singing. It doesn't sound like Cantonese to me. Is it close to Fujianese or what? Quote
zhuhao Posted July 6, 2010 at 09:33 AM Report Posted July 6, 2010 at 09:33 AM 周云蓬 is basically amazing; seconding that rec. My two other favorite folk performers are 山人 They have a self-titled EP and are a BRILLIANT live show if you ever get to see them. They have an energy and a playfulness that is second to none in the Beijing scene. 苏阳 is a solo artist that often performs with his band. I saw him at the Ditan Folk Festival this May and was incredibly impressed with the power of the vocals and the depth of sound. There are others, of course, but those and Zhou Yunpeng are the best, in my humble and underinformed opinion. 1 Quote
Flying Pigeon Posted July 6, 2010 at 11:26 AM Report Posted July 6, 2010 at 11:26 AM I really like 王娟. I think she has a beautiful voice. She's also worked outside the folk genre, singing for Gemini Trip. Quote
New Members the_otter Posted January 5, 2011 at 12:44 PM New Members Report Posted January 5, 2011 at 12:44 PM I'm into traditional folk from the UK. Can anyone add any other Chinese folk music recommendations, please? Quote
