sukitc Posted June 15, 2009 at 02:42 AM Report Posted June 15, 2009 at 02:42 AM Hi, I would like to ask whether there is an actual character for the Hakka word for the first person "I", pronounced "ngai3". Also, the word for the third person "he/she", pronounced "gee3". Thank you. Quote

Mugi Posted July 7, 2009 at 03:34 AM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 03:34 AM First person ngai2 (Hakka tone: 陽平) is commonly written [亻厓] (human radical + yá), or with other more common characters encompassing the 厓 yá character, such as 崖 and 捱. However, ngai2 is actually the 白讀 for 我 (i.e. 我 is the 本字 for ngai2). The third person pronoun ki2 (your gee3) is typically written 佢 (same derivation as Cantonese keuih5 佢/渠. Quote
Hofmann Posted July 7, 2009 at 05:09 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 05:09 PM Asiawind is a little too full of BS for my tastes, for example, the "Hakka as one of the oldest Chinese dialects" section, "Hakka and English - Coincidence?" section, their lack of understanding of IPA, and the proposed links between genetics and language.
