Treece Posted June 15, 2009 at 04:22 PM Report Posted June 15, 2009 at 04:22 PM I am new to the forum, and also new to learning Chinese. I learned a few Pinyin letters...B, P, J, X, etc. Through the Nintendo DS My Chinese Coach, lol! Well anywho, I got the the part of pronouncing some Pinyin letters that require you to move your tongue to the roof of your mouth. It's an awkward feeling, for me being an English speaker, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips, or if the feeling goes away once you've mastered it? I am sorry if this has been posted before...it probably has, hopefully not because I would hate to act like a newbie!! I'd also llike to ask if anyone who has mastered Chinese, do you get compliments on well you speak it? I took spanish for awhile and was complimented on how well I did it, and I am nervous that i will end up botching every word once I've learned this language!! Quote
OneEye Posted June 16, 2009 at 05:31 AM Report Posted June 16, 2009 at 05:31 AM I don't have any experience with that program, but I'd be wary of trying to learn pronunciation from a Nintendo game. Take a look at the Pronunciation and Romanization Module from FSI's Standard Chinese. You'll need the text file and the first 6 "tapes" listed. You can complete the module in a couple days' time. It's a fantastic way to get your pronunciation and pinyin up to snuff. Quote

Some sounds in Chinese are more difficult than others but there's nothing in Chinese that is impossible for an English speaker to master if he really wants to.do you get compliments on [how] well you speak it?Yes, you do, a lot of times. But don't take this as an evidence of your mastery of Chinese. You have to be so good that Chinese people just stop saying how well you speak Chinese. Make this your real goal! Quote
Treece Posted June 16, 2009 at 03:14 PM Author Report Posted June 16, 2009 at 03:14 PM Thank you all for the replies. OneEye I will look into that program as I understand the flaws a Nintendo DS game can have, and it won't be my only tool as I plan on taking Chinese in college. Hashiri, thanks for answering my questions, that's very helpful, and sorry for the typos and missing words. Quote
