bryce1 Posted June 19, 2009 at 09:50 PM Report Posted June 19, 2009 at 09:50 PM Hello everyone! I had a question about the word beta/必应. Is this word pronounced bi4ying1 or bi4ying4? Is the character ying4 frequent at all? I always have problems with 多音字 and could not find this word in my dictionaries. (I am also assuming that 必应 means beta.. perhaps it also has other meanings?) Thanks/谢谢! Quote
skylee Posted June 20, 2009 at 12:43 AM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 12:43 AM I don't think 必应 means beta. Quote
imron Posted June 20, 2009 at 01:06 AM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 01:06 AM Apparently the name comes from the phrase 有求必应, at the same time it is also an approximation of the English pronunciation of Bing. As Skylee mentioned, it has nothing to do with beta. I would say the pronunciation of 应 should be yìng as this pronunciation means to reply/answer something. Quote
roddy Posted June 20, 2009 at 01:12 AM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 01:12 AM I'm assuming you're reading that off Bing Chinese - the 必应 is the Chinese for 'Bing', not Beta. As said, pronunciation would be yìng - it's 'must respond', not 'must should' Quote
