fenrir1986 Posted June 20, 2009 at 04:31 AM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 04:31 AM Hi, I'm an Indonesian Chinese and my full name is Ang Hiem Hok, my grandfather was the person named me and my parents told me that my name was in Hokkien, the problem is that they didn't know the meaning of my middle name "Hiem" (my grandfather already past before my parents ask him about my name's meaning). Ang in my name refer to Hong in Mandarin which mean flood, and Hok refer to Fu in Mandarin which mean lucky. So please anyone help me to translate "Hiem" in Mandarin, its hanyu pinyin, and also its meaning. Many thanks for the help^^ Quote
HashiriKata Posted June 20, 2009 at 11:28 AM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 11:28 AM In order to make it easier to do some guesswork for "Hiem Hok", you should tell us whether this is a male or female name. Quote
Mugi Posted June 20, 2009 at 03:29 PM Report Posted June 20, 2009 at 03:29 PM There are two characters in Taiwanese Hokkien that are pronounced "him" (which is as close to "hiem" as TwHk gets): 歆 and 熊. For a name, I would guess the former is the most likely candidate. Quote

Mugi Posted June 22, 2009 at 07:31 AM Report Posted June 22, 2009 at 07:31 AM You could also try 當代泉州音字彙 for other candidate characters. Try typing in 歆 or 賢 into the search field and you should get a list of other characters with the same pronunciation. Quote
