Xiao Kui Posted June 24, 2009 at 02:41 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 02:41 PM I haven't been able to access google or gmail since abt 9:30 pm (BJ time) this evening except using witopia or other proxy. I'm in Kunming. Anyone else having problems? Quote

roddy Posted June 24, 2009 at 02:55 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 02:55 PM I can get to Gmail fine. Other Google services I use (Finance, Adsense, Reader, Documents) are down. Edit: Actually just reloaded tabs and got Adsense, Docs and Reader. And . . just got search back. I'm not sure this is a block - maybe network issues, maybe a warning shot. My money is on everything working tomorrow morning Quote
muyongshi Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:02 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:02 PM Also note that google.cn is NOT blocked Quote
roddy Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:07 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:07 PM There's a report on twitter that google.com is redirecting to google.cn. I'm not seeing this myself. Quote
muyongshi Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:09 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:09 PM I'm also going with Roddy on this one. The timing was just too weird for it to be a total black out. Quote
muyongshi Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:12 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:12 PM Not seeing it here either. The forums seem to be moving slow for me tonight as well.... Quote
Xiao Kui Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:13 PM Author Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:13 PM It seems to be unblocked now. Such weird antics. This is the 1st time Gmail's been blocked for me since I started using it in 2006. read the danwei link, wonder what the media has planned for its promised payback tomorrow. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:17 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:17 PM ... and I just switched everything over from hotmail to gmail a couple of weeks ago when hotmail was blocked :clap:clap surely this can't be a permanent block? Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:19 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:19 PM ah, the Danwei post linked above is now retitled: AND GOOGLE'S BACK - previously entitled 'Google.com blocked in China' Quote

roddy Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:24 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:24 PM I like to think there's a battle of wills going on: Cadre: Behave, or we'll ban you. Google: Leave us alone, or we'll turn Google off and everyone will THINK you banned us. Cadre: 囧。雷人。我晕。 1 Quote
Guest realmayo Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:29 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:29 PM The forums seem to be moving slow for me tonight as well... is that because of google ads, and google-analytics? Quote
muyongshi Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:37 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:37 PM The MY cadre decided to show how much they support the cadre by actually blocking it [still no access here] Cadre:瓜娃子 Quote
roddy Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:39 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:39 PM is that because of google ads, and google-analytics? I haven't noticed any issues, but I can't remember if and when I had Witopia running. When this topic was posted I did check, and there weren't any problems. Analytics should tell me if there was a significant drop in visitors from China, but I'm not expecting to see anything as a) don't think there were any problems and B) it was only a few hours anyway. We may actually end up ahead if we get a spike of people searching for 'gmail blocked in China'. None so far though . . . Edit: latest stats: visitors searching for 'gmail china' have increased 100%, with two so far today compared with one yesterday. Meanwhile 'gmail China closed' has rocketed infinity%, with a single visitor today. But today ain't over yet folks, especially when you're not even sure which timezone your stats are calculated in. Guest realmayo Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:59 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 03:59 PM yeah, when I refresh this page (for example) I have to wait 10 or 15 seconds while firefox is "waiting for google.com", before any text will show. Quote

roddy Posted June 24, 2009 at 04:06 PM Report Posted June 24, 2009 at 04:06 PM It wasn't pornography, someone posted earlier with a link that said it was technical issues. Realmayo, if it's hanging like that on every page load can you start a topic under help / bugs report. There is a fair amount of javascript and extras in the html at the moment, I can maybe cut down some for logged in members at least. Quote
