Xiao Kui Posted July 7, 2009 at 11:52 AM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 11:52 AM (edited) Is anyone else having trouble getting on FB? I have witopia, so it's not a biggie. Just wondered if it was nationwide or just a technical glitch with our local server. Thanks! (I'm in Kunming.) Edited July 7, 2009 at 01:06 PM by Xiao Kui Quote
roddy Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:02 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:02 PM Acting blocked up here in Beijing. Edit: Can people specify where they are when checking in, especially if they haven't filled in the location field on their profile. Quote
imron Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:34 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:34 PM @roddy, is it acting blocked up for you even through Witopia? Quote
roddy Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:41 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:41 PM No. That's why it's acting blocked, not acting broken. I only use Facebook to play chess. They've banned chess!!! And I was winning! If you haven't already got one folks, this might be the time to sign up for a VPN like Witopia for hassle-free access to the 'world' bit of the world wide web. Use that link and I even get a little cash . . . Quote

Guest realmayo Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:52 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 12:52 PM Also, I was using Gladder in firefox, to easily get round the blocks, but in the last week or so it had stopped working completely. Quote
Xiao Kui Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:08 PM Author Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:08 PM I've only been on FB since the beginning of this yr, but this is the first time it's been blocked for me. Not sure how, but possibly related to XJ riots?? Quote
roddy Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:10 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:10 PM Almost certainly. I suspect if you go looking for it you'll find a number of relevant groups / fan pages / whatever popping up or becoming more active over the last few days. Quote
wushijiao Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:17 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 01:17 PM Hehe...I had a bet with my co-worker...I estimated they'd ban it in three months (that was one month ago). Besides XUAR news, I wonder if this RFA report had anything to do with it. Quote
Mouseneb Posted July 7, 2009 at 02:41 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 02:41 PM Blocked in Haikou, Hainan. I've been dreading this day! May it pass quickly. Quote

joshuawbb Posted July 7, 2009 at 04:38 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 04:38 PM Wow, I was even online earlier in the day. Blocked here in Fujian/Xiamen too. Quote
zozzen Posted July 7, 2009 at 08:16 PM Report Posted July 7, 2009 at 08:16 PM blocked in Yunnan, but work at my computer in Yunnan... For newbies in China, check this out: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/30-chinese-reading-materials607 Quote
imron Posted July 8, 2009 at 12:11 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 12:11 AM And also this one, which describes numerous ways to get around the blocks. Witopia (linked above) is probable the easiest, most hassle-free, and reliable. It is also a paid service (and works out to about 1 RMB a day over a year). Quote
muyongshi Posted July 8, 2009 at 02:28 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 02:28 AM @roddy, is it acting blocked up for you even through Witopia? Yes I know I'm not Roddy but... in my Mac OS it feels blocked even in Witpoia but I just tried it on windows with Witopia and it just seems really slow. So, yes here in Mianyang it is blocked even though saying that is probably a mute point. Quote
roddy Posted July 8, 2009 at 02:35 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 02:35 AM Your VPN might be running slow overall, or there could be network issues somewhere (possible, although I suspect unlikely, is congestion between the Witopia servers and Facebook, or Witopia throttling Facebook traffic to leave bandwidth for other users). Drop Witopia a line, they're generally pretty quick to respond. But I'm wagering nobody has figured out how to specifically block Facebook traffic within your VPN connection. For what it's worth, Facebook over Witopia is working fine for me. Quote
liuzhou Posted July 8, 2009 at 03:02 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 03:02 AM Blocked in Guangxi. Seems national. Quote
Loriquero Posted July 8, 2009 at 04:31 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 04:31 AM I have my personal VPN and is not working even there :S but youtube and blogspot work just fine. I´ll try to restart my PC Quote
roddy Posted July 8, 2009 at 04:38 AM Report Posted July 8, 2009 at 04:38 AM You could maybe try running a trace route to see where the problem is. Quote
