blink Posted September 10, 2009 at 03:12 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 03:12 AM I'm having trouble with witopia that I think may be related to the supplicant issue you're discussing. I'm at BNU. I can access blocked sites through webbased workarounds like xb browser, but witopia is having trouble. Does anyone know if this is the case or if others at BNU are having a similar problem? I'm hoping there's another fix since I don't have an extra computer handy. Quote
XiaoBin Posted September 10, 2009 at 06:16 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 06:16 AM From what I understand is that Freegate is completely blocked at the moment. I'm trying to use a free VPN service, but somehow it's not working in public hotspots. Does anyone have any confirmed ways to get to blocked websites? That you can even use at public hotspots? Quote
gato Posted September 10, 2009 at 06:49 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 06:49 AM Yeah, looks like the Internet is taking a holiday for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. Maybe try xB browser (formerly known as torpark) while the folks at Freegate cook up something else. https://xerobank.com/download/xb-browser/ Quote
XiaoBin Posted September 10, 2009 at 07:17 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 07:17 AM Thnx Gato, xB seems to work. XB are also my initials, looks like destiny But it's a free 30 days and after you have to pay. Are there any free VPN that work? Not trying to be cheap, but I only need it for 5 monts, so don't want to pay for a full year. It seems to work a bit slow, the trial version. It's fine as it works in a separate browser. So now I have xB running for the websites I are blocked and opera for regular websites. fb seems not to work completely on it, but it might be due to a slow connection or something. But for now I have 30 days surfing the web with no restrictions. Thanks again Quote
imron Posted September 10, 2009 at 07:51 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 07:51 AM Sounds like you downloaded the non-free (but higher-speed) version. Quote
gato Posted September 10, 2009 at 09:02 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 09:02 AM But for now I have 30 days surfing the web with no restrictions. Thanks again Hopefully the Internet will be back to normal again after the big number 60. Or at least, the good folks at freegate will have figured out a way.... Quote
blink Posted September 10, 2009 at 10:30 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 10:30 AM I actually bought Witopia but it's not working. I think its because BNU is blocking it... Does anyone know a way to fix it without using a second computer? Quote
gato Posted September 10, 2009 at 11:01 AM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 11:01 AM Supposedly, Mento Supplicant (a replacement for Ruijie) can address a number of problems that Ruijie has, including VPN and maybe bandwidth quota. Give it a shot. http://bbs.ghtt.net/viewthread.php?tid=52172 锐捷supplicant认证程序Mento Supplicant for Ruijie (installation instruction in Post # Mento can be downloaded here: http://cid-533ebd7962189592.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Slyar%20Download/Slyar%5E_Mento%20Supplicant.rar Mento Supplicant If that doesn't work, maybe try this: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/vpn-cuts-off-network-authorization-software-please-help-t365960.html VPN cuts off Network Authorization software - Please Help Quote
imron Posted September 10, 2009 at 12:07 PM Report Posted September 10, 2009 at 12:07 PM @blink how does the blocking occur? Are you also required to run network authentication software (like Ruijie Supplicant)? If so, check the links provided by gato. If it's unrelated to network authentication software it may be that they are blocking the standard VPN ports. If this is the case you should look at changing the default ports (see Witopia's help page here). You can configure Witopia's VPN so that it runs over TCP on port 443. This is the exact same protocol/port used for secure websites (https). So the connection will look as if it is merely a web connection to a secure site, rather than a VPN connection. This was part of the reason I mentioned above about the economic ramifications of disabling all secure connections. It would basically put an end to e-commerce if they had to shut down all of them. gato Posted September 11, 2009 at 04:33 PM Report Posted September 11, 2009 at 04:33 PM Freegate seems to be working, again. The latest version is from Aug. 26, version 6.88. Upgrade if yours is not the latest version. Quote
XiaoBin Posted September 12, 2009 at 03:37 AM Report Posted September 12, 2009 at 03:37 AM Is it possible to post a direct link to the freegate download? or upload it on some server and provide the link? For some reason my browser won't open any page related to freegate download. Could be due slow connection or something, very strange tho. Quote
gato Posted September 12, 2009 at 03:54 AM Report Posted September 12, 2009 at 03:54 AM Is it possible to post a direct link to the freegate download? Here it is, the current latest version (version 6.88, Aug. 26, 2009): http://rapidshare.com/files/278881490/fg688p.rar Enjoy! Quote
liuzhou Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:09 AM Report Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:09 AM (edited) Freegate 6.88 is still having problems. It finds it very difficult to find servers and, if it does find any, quickly loses them again. This is the same problem which started affecting 6.86 about a week ago. Prior to that it had very few problems. Edited September 17, 2009 at 09:02 AM by liuzhou Quote
marco-polo Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:41 AM Report Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:41 AM Here's another data point from the dorms at Tsinghua: although I was able to connect to Witopia and access Facebook, etc. for a while, the connection went down after a couple of minutes and the computer had to be restarted to get back on line. This experience was repeated often enough for me to think it has to be more than a coincidence. Right now I'm using Witopia with no issues from a hotel in Beijing, so I can confirm that there appears to be some kind of anti-VPN technology at work in the universities. I'm going to try connecting over an alternate port tomorrow. Quote
blink Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:59 AM Report Posted September 12, 2009 at 07:59 AM imron i could kiss you - the port change you suggested worked. i tried something similar from the witopia site a few days ago with no luck, but the code on the page you linked worked. woohoo i have nonblocked internet:D Quote
XiaoBin Posted September 13, 2009 at 02:50 AM Report Posted September 13, 2009 at 02:50 AM Freegate works for me, even in public hotspots! And it looks pretty fast! Thanks! Quote
muyongshi Posted September 17, 2009 at 03:17 AM Report Posted September 17, 2009 at 03:17 AM Kind of an odd side note but is anybody else unable to access this site through witopia {it's blocked now in China- don't honestly know why just happened one day}. It's odd cause I can access it through freegate {when that actually connects} but not on witopia. Kind of an irregularity- tried on both mac and windows. Quote
gerri Posted September 17, 2009 at 06:03 AM Report Posted September 17, 2009 at 06:03 AM Nope, can't open that site... running Witopia PPTP (which, as mentioned in another post, works again since I turned off internet connection sharing) Quote
liuzhou Posted September 17, 2009 at 10:27 AM Report Posted September 17, 2009 at 10:27 AM Freegate New version due next week? http://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/gfw-09162009120149.html Quote
woofs Posted September 21, 2009 at 08:56 AM Report Posted September 21, 2009 at 08:56 AM Hi there, Please forgive my ignorance and complete lack of technical skills, but what am I supposed to do after downloading the freegate file? My computer doesn't recognize the file type and doesn't know how to open it. >< Thank you! Quote
