Review on Witopia and other "Anti-Wall" apps

I can no longer reliably watch Youtube videos over Witopia. Anything longer than two or three minutes takes so long to buffer that it's not really worth it, and some longer videos refuse to load altogether.

Speed in general has dropped.

On the whole, however, it's still more painless than other solutions I've tried, and it does what I really need it to...

Another vote for Freegate - however, with the caveat that the application is Windows only. So, if anyone knows of a *nix [ubuntu] free application, then I'm all ears (so to speak). Once I get Anki to work properly with Ubuntu 8.10 - and then test after upgrading to 10.4 - and a VPN then wave goodbye to Windows on this netbook.

After a long hiatus, Hotspot Shield is working for me again and quite good at that. Faster than Freegate, and also without the hassle of having to set a proxy.

No sooner did I add my vote for Freegate, when it has been down all weekend (cannot find any proxy servers). Is anyone else suffering from this issue? I'm starting to get Youtube / Basement Jaxx withdrawal feelings.

You can try a beta version of FG 7.0 below, but I see a few others complaining on the FG discussion forum of access problem starting this weekend, so it could be the GFW is kicking it up another notch.

Thanks Gato. Much appreciated. FG v7.0 Professional Edition (beta) works. Now, I need to spend some time researching Ubuntu VPNs so I can rid myself of Windows from this netbook.

GFW seems to be really kicking out the jams because not only does Freegate Professional Edition 7.0 no longer work, but Hotspot Shield (for 'specialist Japanese interest' sites) is not connecting - permanently stuck on 'yellow'.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with either of these VPNs?

It may be time to look at a fee-based VPN, as aside from the obvious - Facebook, Youtube - I've been watching South Park from the official website, as well as delving into Wikipedia to investigate engineering disciplines and concepts.

Hotspot Shield also stopped working for me.

I use a different version of Freegate, which is called FreeU10, or 逍遙游, and that is still working.

As per usual, your VPN advice is on the money. I checked my USB stick and one of my friends provided a whole bunch of Freegate apps, inc. FreeU 1.0. It works!

I do miss Hotspot Shield because most (but not *all*, fear not folks!) of my 'specialist Japanese interest' sites are blocked. 

If anyone requires FreeU 1.0, then post a reply and I can put it on a file-hosting site for people to download.

Ah, sorry to necropost but is Witopia still a reliable bet? Any other VPN's worth checking out?
