xiao an Posted August 9, 2009 at 11:20 AM Report Posted August 9, 2009 at 11:20 AM The information I read here was very useful, thanx a lot. I have a question regarding students with full Chinese government scholarships. Which dorm are they assigned to? (I am hoping to rent something outside campus later on; however, the first days/weeks still will be spent in dorms of the university. Quote

Lenovo86 Posted August 18, 2009 at 07:25 PM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 07:25 PM Hey there, My name is Gabriel and I am from Germany. I have also been accepted as a language student at Jilin University. I am currently in Beijing and to be honest, I do not have a clue how to get to Changchun (by train? by plane? Where to book?) and where to stay at in Jilin. Internet access is crucial to me (a bed aside ;)) so while I am in Changchun I do not want to be without it. This aside, I am also wondering wether to stay at the university dorms which are told to be overpriced or to rent a one person apartment near the university. However, if I were to go for an apartment I'd still have no idea where and how to find one as I am not all too familar with renting living space in China and even though my chinese is not all that bad I would not trust myself to be able to handle it all that well yet! So if there is anyone that could give me some advice it would be really appreciated! Kind Regards Gab Quote
bored Posted August 19, 2009 at 02:24 AM Report Posted August 19, 2009 at 02:24 AM hey gab, are you going to jilin or changchun? for changchun u can take the D train from beijing. it is only six hours. or u can do an overnight sleeper. u can find the time schedule at http://chinahighlights.com/china-trains/ but u cant book there. u can buy a ticket at the beijing train station. do u have a local friend that can help you? u can also buy an air ticket...quicker but more expensive....see www.ctrip.com or www.elong.com jilin is only a 1hr 45min min train ride from here Quote
Lenovo86 Posted August 19, 2009 at 03:35 AM Report Posted August 19, 2009 at 03:35 AM Hi Bored, Thanks for the info! Changchun it is. Sadly I do not have a local friend there which makes it quite difficult for me to find a place to stay in. Are there any hotels or hostels you would recommend? (One with internet access in your room?) And how to get an appartment? Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Quote
xiao an Posted August 20, 2009 at 08:40 AM Report Posted August 20, 2009 at 08:40 AM I am also worried about internet services as I am not going to quit my job while studying in China. But I believe everything will go well with it. Speaking about apartment, even if you don't have any local friend, it will not be a problem to find a place to live outside dorm. I feel the usual practice is that you stay at dorm for a couple of days until you find one. Does anyone know where is it cheap in Changchun to have vaccines (I have to continue the course of vaccination and this will have to take place in China). Quote
bored Posted August 21, 2009 at 08:17 AM Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 08:17 AM the real estate places do not have english speaking staff...at least none that i know of. if u cant speak good chinese u will probaly need someone who can to help u. also if u get an off campus apartment u have to be careful. the heat in the apartments come from burning coal for the whole building. this means u cant control it. in the winter my apartment gets to about 5C. i have an electrical heater but it barely helps. some apartments are cold while some are not the biggest hospital here is either the first or second hospital of jilin university....they are not on the campus Quote

New Members Pealad Posted July 2, 2010 at 10:45 AM New Members Report Posted July 2, 2010 at 10:45 AM Hi all! I hope you all still post on here because I need your help. I've been offered a place to study at Jilin University through the Chinese Govt. Scholarship Programme to study International Relations. Being honest I hadn't heard of the University or the course before so is all a bit of a shock!! Especially as the course starts on 1 September! Anyone doing this course or something similar? What's it like there? All your posts before have been really helpful in setting the scene for me! Quote
