agimcomas Posted July 18, 2009 at 03:28 PM Report Posted July 18, 2009 at 03:28 PM Hello all! I was wondering, if there are people out there, who can tell us how learning and speaking Chinese has helped their careers? Very much appreciated! Agustin Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted July 18, 2009 at 05:55 PM Report Posted July 18, 2009 at 05:55 PM I suppose it has helped my career but only as a skill that has been added to other ones that had already been recognised. Chinese is another credit point if you like. However, I didnt start out learning Chinese in order to further my career. Quote
tooironic Posted July 19, 2009 at 10:43 AM Report Posted July 19, 2009 at 10:43 AM I've learnt Chinese most my life and am now embarking on a career in translation. So I suppose, yes, it has helped my "career", but that's to be expected considering the choices I have made. Can't speak for other people who have learnt it in conjunction with a career that has little to do with languages though. Quote
sebhk Posted July 19, 2009 at 12:21 PM Report Posted July 19, 2009 at 12:21 PM No it hasn't. But it is nice to be able to chat with my Chinese friends and other people when being in China. It might be useful for my career in the future, but I guess probably not. I always tell people who consider learning Chinese for their career only to make sure they not only learn it to follow the latest trend in "important" languages. A decade or so ago many people started learning Japanese or Arabic for their careers, because it was said that these languages would be extremely important for business. I have several friends who started learning Japanese during that time, but in fact they never used it for anything but private stuff (traveling, chatting with friends etc). Quote
Lu Posted July 19, 2009 at 01:14 PM Report Posted July 19, 2009 at 01:14 PM Chinese is my career. I studied Chinese language and culture in university, and most of the jobs I've had so far had to do with China and Chinese. Quote
renzhe Posted July 20, 2009 at 12:39 AM Report Posted July 20, 2009 at 12:39 AM No, not at all, and it I can't imagine that it could ever make a difference, other than an interesting chat topic at a job interview, maybe. Quote
jbradfor Posted July 20, 2009 at 01:33 AM Report Posted July 20, 2009 at 01:33 AM Nope. However, having lived and studied in Taiwan gave me a better understanding of Chinese culture, and, I think, allows me to interact better with my Chinese co-workers. Quote
wushijiao Posted July 20, 2009 at 02:12 PM Report Posted July 20, 2009 at 02:12 PM Chinese is my career. I studied Chinese language and culture in university, and most of the jobs I've had so far had to do with China and Chinese. That's pretty similar to my situation. Quote
